It is named after the Dogger Bank, a large sandbank that was once part of Doggerland. The sandbank is named after a type of Dutch fishing boat called a dogger. Doggerland started to disappear when rising sea levels reduced it to low-lying islands until even these were submerged, possibly due to a tsunami caused by a submarine landslide that was one of the Storegga Slides (these were some of the largest such landslides in history, occurring at the edge of Norway's continental shelf).

The Empire is also known as the Triple Alliance. It consisted of the city-states of Tenochtitlan, Texcoco and Tlacopan, and although they were initially self-governing, Tenochtitlan came to dominate the others until the Empire was essentially ruled from there. When the Aztecs conquered a city, they left the rulers in power as long as they agreed to pay a semi-annual tribute and to supply military forces when needed for war efforts.
