The natural disaster in question was a series of Yangtze floods that occurred in 1931. After a long drought lasting from 1928 to 1930, there was a particularly harsh winter, which created large deposits of snow and ice in mountainous areas near the river. When the snow and ice melted in 1931, it flowed down the Yangtze until it reached the middle stretch of the river, which was experiencing heavy rains. In July of the same year, there were nine cyclones, adding to the flooding that was by then occurring. Up to 4 million people died.
