Looks like I didn't get Zimbabwe when I typed it because of the "`" in the answer.

I somehow expected Kenya or Tanzania there.

Same here. Definitely expected to see if over Algeria, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Kenya was my first guess, amazed it's not here.

My first type in too. Shocked.

Very surprised that Kenya, Tanzania, Libya, and Ethiopia all receive fewer tourists than Mozambique! I guessed Cape Verde and several others, too. I'm guessing South Africans must be in the habit of taking trips to neighboring countries; not sure why else Mozambique, Botswana, or Zimbabwe would be on here.

Libya has been rather war-torn in recent years, parts of the country are still dangerous. Even if things have calmed down more recently, the perception of it being dangerous will take some time to disappear.

There is also still a relative lack of tourist infrastructure that needs time to be built and develop. Most tourists are more likely to be drawn to more established places.

Assuming some political stability, I'm sure Libya will improve its infrastructure, perhaps making the most of its Roman sites.

Being war-torn and having poor tourist infrastructure doesn't exactly make you stand out from the rest of Africa. Being so close to Europe and having some of the most impressive Roman ruins in the world does.

Libya is still a warzone. Most of the countries won't allow direct flights towards Libya. Only a few countries do. But it is sad, because it is a beautifull country.

Mozambique is popular for beach holidays.

Libya is currently unavailable to be able to get to as a tourist, as the government is not issuing tourist visas and the only way to get in is on a business visa.

You can't even go to Libya as a tourist, only for diplomatic missions.

I was surprised that Namibia isn't on the list.

Seems highly unlikely that Mozambique has more than Kenya or Tanzania

It must be a conspiracy of zebras!

This has everything to do with migrant workers. With limited work available in Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique, many workers come to South Africa to find employment. They leave their families behind and travel to South Africa for work. Then travel back and forth between the two countries. (I am from South Africa).

I though the zebras were mostly in Botswana (which I definitely tried as an answer. ~~ • ~~ As for the weirdness of these answers: mcpf, I think you should really change the name of the quiz, because "visitors" are not necessarily tourists. I don't doubt that Nigeria gets tons of visitors. I do doubt they get this many folks just popping in to see the sights over the safari countries.

Dimeon's answer makes a lot of sense. This is part of the reason why Mexico receives so many tourists annually from the United States. Many of those tourists are actually Mexicans or Mexican-Americans visiting family.

Well, Mexico also has a lot of major resorts - Cozumel, Acapulco, Cancun...

As I think was suggested in a few previous comments, the quiz confuses "visitors" (several categories there) and just one of those categories, "tourists."

These answers were fairly surprising. I mean, what makes people want to go to Botswana, Zimbabwe or The Ivory Coast?
+7
Level 80

Not sure about the Ivory Coast but Zimbabwe and Botswana have some of the most abundant wildlife and Zimbabwe has a lot of natural beauty like Victoria Falls.

Botswana has the greatest elephant population in the world so was one of my first guesses but the Ivory Coast never crossed my mind and still surprised that it receives more than Kenya and Tanzania

Something's off with this - how are there more tourists in Ivory Coast than in Kenya or Tanzania

If the quiz was "African Countries with the most non-African tourists" instead, Kenya or Tanzania would probably make the list!

Still have lots of tourists from all over (Mt. Kilimanjaro & Kenya, safaris, Zanzibar). What is the draw of Ivory Coast within Africa?
+1

Just a guess, but Ivory Coast has a huge port - one of the biggest on the continent. Traffic to and from probably effects these numbers significantly.

It looks like African tourists prefer very different destinations than European tourists. Otherwise Tanzania and Seychelles would make the top 5.
