The state's name comes from the Mohegan word 'quonehtacut', meaning 'place of the long tidal river'.

This name could be shorthand for 'the mainland'.

Named after the area's original inhabitants. Their name may come in turn from 'muswach8sut' in the Wôpanâak language: 'by the great hill'.

Named after a county on the south coast of England, by John Mason. He drew up the first English map of Newfoundland, but he never actually got to New England.

It's possible that Dutch captain Adriaen Block saw this region and noticed its red autumnal leaves: he called it 'een rodlich Eylande'.

A French mariner, Samuel de Champlain, called it (in French) a 'green mountain'.
