For this quiz, the definition of Slavic people will be ethnic Slavs and Slavicized minorities. Former countries that did not assimilate during their occupation of Slavic territory (e.g. Mongol Empire) are not considered. Slavs that occupied other regions and lost their identities as time went on are also excluded.

Not sure if you want to count this but for a few years in the mid 17th century the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia (nowday Latvia) while being part of the Crown of the Polish Kingdom colonized The Gambia and Trinidad and Tobago.

Afghanistan was once communist and was backed by the Soviets

The Soviets tried putting down the Mujahideen and the Soviets as well as the DRA controlled the most populous cities as well as major highways

+1

It's primarily because I want the zoom boxes to be a bit more spread out. A good chunk of the map would look empty

Can you add a dot to the least guess answer? I had a minute left and spent my time clicking on the map at random trying to see which country I had missed. Judging by how low it’s score is, other people have failed to notice it too.

The two least guessed answers as of me writing this comment, Madagascar and Cameroon, are both easily visible
+10
Level 84
Oct 5, 2021
I have to disagree....I got all but those two and spent a solid minute hunting the map, zooming in all over, before I found them.
+3
Level 75
Oct 5, 2021
I've tried both light and dark modes, and on 3 different screen sizes (6.8, 10.1, and 19 inches). They weren't hard to spot regardless. So I really don't think it's that big of an issue
+3
Level 66
Jun 5, 2022
Easier to see if you know where to look - I didn't find Madagascar in the time limit
+14
Level 91
Oct 4, 2021
I think the general rule should be that if a dot on the wide-zoom map is larger than a yellow area with boundaries, then the boundaries should be replaced with a dot. It's too hard to have to click and zoom every square inch of the map trying to find tiny little slivers of territory that are indistinguishable on the large map from geographical features.
+3
Level 55
Oct 4, 2021
It's not meant to be easy.

That spot in Madagascar is larger than the dots I believe

Also those bits are clearly visible

+8
Level 84
Oct 5, 2021
I disagree. Cameroon and Madagascar spots are definitely smaller on my screen than the dots. Chrome browser on a MacBook, if that matters.
+1
Level 75
Oct 5, 2021
I tested it on three different screen sizes in both light and dark mode

They weren't hard to see in any of them

+14
Level 84

Agreed. I had to zoom-hunt for Denmark, Cameroon, Madagascar, Senegal, and South Korea. I'm not a fan of zoom-hunting.

That's kinda your own problem, buddy.
+3
Level 75
Oct 4, 2021
Really? Senegal?

I literally added a zoom box for that already

+5
Level 77
Oct 5, 2021
If you don't like zoom-hunting then why did you take this quiz? Furthermore, why do you complain to the quiz author? If they added zoom boxes for every single detail then this would be less of a map of the world and more of a map of boxes.

Japan would insist to be included (Kuril islands), if anybody asked them.
+6

I zoomed in and out almost everywhere, still couldn't see the spot in Madagascar. It is not visible in the main map at all.
+3
Level 75

I've tested it and they're visible on my phone (6.8''), my tablet (10.1'') as well as my computer (19'') in both light and dark mode.
+3
Level 83
Oct 9, 2021
to the quiz-setter: you know, maybe it's visible to *you* because you knew where to look? just maybe?
+1
Level 75
Oct 9, 2021
Yes, it's definitely easier for me, but that still doesn't really change the fact that they're visible on the map.
+1
Level 91
Oct 9, 2021
Yes, so is it.
+3
Level 71
Oct 5, 2021
Shouldn't Vatican City be included? It is an absolute monarchy which was controlled by a slavic pope (Pope John Paul II) from 1978 to 2005. So I would say that it fits the criteria of the quiz.
+2
Level 75
Oct 5, 2021
Oh, I didn't know about that. It should I believe.

It will be added in the future update, thanks

+3

Is this meant to be a "take an educated guess" quiz, or a "click randomly on the map until you chance upon a spot of yellow" quiz?

I didn't know I was doing a map hunt instead of a quiz. maybe the title should change

Some territories are not quite visible in the map. These include Cameroon, Senegal, Madagascar, Denmark. Is it possible to add a circle for them?
+3
Level 75
Oct 9, 2021
I don't think it's necessary, especially since they can be easily seen with just 1 click.
+6
Level 72
Oct 9, 2021
I second the request for circles. I missed Madagascar and Cameroon because I didn't zoom in the right places. I doesn't help that the map cuts of part of southern Africa - made me think that there is nothing important there so I didn't even bother zooming into that area.
+3
Level 75
Oct 10, 2021
Well, I only cut portions with literally no answers

So cutting only a part of the South would suggest that there is at least one answer somewhere down there

+3
Level 44
Oct 9, 2021
Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund was of pure Slavic blood, being an offspring of Czech and Polish royal dynasties. So I'd add also the borders of Holy Roman Empire in the early 15th century, which would include Benelux countries, Switzerland, Liechten, Austria, Italy, Monaco and a little bit more of Eastern France.

Also Vatican, because you know, pope John Paul II.

+2
Level 75
Oct 9, 2021
Interesting, I'll do some research on that, thanks
+4
Level 64
Oct 9, 2021
Very good, but it was hard to spot Senegal and Madagascar. Perhaps these could be better identified so one can know where they are.
+2
Level 75
Oct 9, 2021
Senegal has a zoom box already, whereas Madagascar can be easily spotted with a single click
+7
Level 91
Oct 9, 2021
I'm agreeing Madagascar and Cameroon need dots. Could not find them.
+1
Level 82
Oct 9, 2021
is there any way to add a "show missing countries" thing here? especially since many people (myself included) are having trouble finding all the countries?
+1
Level 75
Oct 10, 2021
That kind of ruins the challenge of finding the answers and just makes it a much easier version of CotW
+3
Level 52
Oct 11, 2021
I mean that's sort of what adding a map in the first place does. If you want it to be challenging you're probably better off not even including a map and just listing occupation percentages. 'Zoom in and out of the map til you find a dash of yellow' isn't exactly a very interesting challenge. Love your work btw!
+1
Level 75
Oct 16, 2021
Well, tbf quizzes involving just countries aren't really challenging to begin with, and most active users can ace CotW in less than 10 minutes, so challenge probably wasn't the right term. Main reason why I made the map was because I believe SVGs generally carry the quality of quizzes.

Thanks for your comment

Have you considered adding Japan? The Sakhalin Islands were populated by the indigenous Nivkh, Ainu, and Ulta, later klepto-claimed by China and then Japan. Russia and Japan tussled over them during the 19th & 20th centuries, each occupying portions of them at times. Now they're under Russian control.
