Fun fact: Finland has 39 lakes named Pyhajärvi! But only 3 of them made it to this quiz

Thank you for the great quiz!

Yes, the literal translation of Pyhäjärvi is 'Holy lake'. Finland have 187 888 lakes according to calculations made in the 80s.

Glad you like it! And thanks for the translation!

I knew Finland had a lot of lakes, but I didn't know they were than many!

Yes, there was earlier estimate that the amount is about 60 000, but calculating also small ponds the amount became three times bigger.

It depends on definition, how big the water area must be to be considered as a lake. In Eastern Finland lakes are big, like Saimaa, and it is difficult to say where one lake starts and another ends. In Northern Lappland there is huge amount of small ponds.

And Norway have 450 000.

Thanks for the info! That's a lot of lakes!

That is fascinating! I saw in Finnish Wikipedia that Norway have 969 100 lakes, if also the smallest lakes are included:

https://fi.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norjan_j%C3%A4rvet

Those "smallest" are bigger than the smallest calculated in Finland, because the limit here was 5 ares (1 are = 10 x 10 meters, in Finnish: aari).

Now my country (Spain) feels like a desert, we only have about 500 lakes apparently!

In North the big amount of lakes is reflection of ice age. Amount of lakes and success in Winter Olympics are positively correlated. Spain on the other hand have potential Xavi and Iniesta in every village. :)

Yes, each country has its things, I guess

Fun fact: Spain does actually have deserts, 3 of them (Tabernas Desert, Monegros Desert and Bardenas Reales)

It seems that the Tabernas Desert is the famous location where many Spaghetti Westerns were filmed. I knew that the location was in Spain, but didn't know where.

I'm not really into films, so I didn't know abaout that either. That's ineteresting to know!

Didn't know about that one! But it definitely looks like a desert. I suppose they ones I mentioned were only the ones in mainland Spain

Great quiz. But as I know Isselmeer and Markermeer are artificial. They used to be part of the open sea (a bay named Zuiderzee) and became lakes by the construction of dams.

Could you accept Peipsi as well as Peipus? It's Estonian and often used internationally too.

Nice! How did you make the map?
+1
Level 55
May 22, 2022
Thanks!

I used this map from Wikimedia Commons as a base, then removed all the unnecessary elements (rivers, many lakes, ...) and changed colours and stuff. Finally, I had to add all the lakes that weren't present (I tried to more or less draw them looking at their shape in Google Maps)

I like your quiz, although it's much more difficult than the one about the hundred rivers.

Could you accept Fertő as well as Neusiedl? It's on the Austrian-Hungarian border, and the Hungarian name is also in use.

Please accept Neagh and Corrib for Lough Neagh and Lough Corrib respectively, or maybe even have Lough already filled in and a line for Neagh. Lough is just a Gaelic word for lake, which shouldn't be required, since you also don't need to type Lake Geneva, etc.

It’s Lake Yalpuh, not Yaluph; and it’s Lake Storuman, not Sioruman. Please accept Kukkureozero for Lake Keret as this is another name given for the same lake on Wikimapia, Russian Wikipedia and Google Maps. Both Lake Storuman and Lake Stora Lulevatten do not light up on the map when answered.
