Why does Cape Verde have what looks like the EU ring of stars on it? Wishful thinking? Brown-nosing for candidacy?

It may be inspired by the flag of the EU, who can say for sure? However, the two are not related at all - the 10 stars (where the EU has 12) represent the 10 islands of Cabo Verde themselves.

Flew through that until the last four. Then ground to a halt. Got three of them but was totally stumped by one.

I spent so long trying to spell Cote d'Ivoire that I missed most of the rest.

That's why I spell it as Ivory Coast which is still accepted even though it's no longer official and I know how to spell Cote d'Ivoire. Cyprus is another one that is difficult to get my fingers working correctly on, even though I know the correct spelling in my brain.

"Congo" is accepted as a type in for the Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo, but in and of itself is not the name of a country.

I'm sorry, but I just refuse to believe that people do so well on so many of the quizzes at this site. The idea that 2/3 of quiz takers have even HEARD of Cote d'Ivoire, let alone recognizes its flag, is just too much to be believed. I wonder what scores would be if people didn't google things while taking the quiz. Just remember, the only person you're cheating is yourself.

You'll notice that it's mostly only the geography quizzes that always have very high scores. I think it's because this site particularly attracts geography nerds -- note that the most popular quiz by far is the Countries of the World, and the following four are also geography. Getting 196 on the Countries of the World is literally a badge of honor here, a sort of right of passage, and once you know all 196 of those countries this type of quiz is easy. Even if you don't recognize the all the flags, you just go through the countries and guess the ones starting with "C." At least, that's what I did for most of them.

By contrast, most of the non-geography quizzes (except for some particularly easy ones) tend to have some very low-scoring items, so I don't think it's an epidemic of cheating.

Agreed. Also, people who don't know the countries on a quiz like this will get the first two and quickly realize they are stuck and bail out. Check out the Bible quizzes. Books of the Bible and most common names - those have high percentages for obscure things as well. And yes, I just about threw a party the first time I got 196 on the world countries quiz - maybe that should be a little icon next to our screen name in addition to our level?
