Lol one would think. The name actually had nothing to do with that. There were settlers from the northeast who named it and there was a giant debate whether to name it after Boston or Portland, Maine. I bet u can guess which won. At least that’s what I remember... Also despite not touching an ocean, the Willamette river flows through the city and at the north border, there is the Columbia river.

That explains why there is also a Portland in Maine. Also, it makes sense why it was called portland if a river flowed through the city. It was probably a stopping point for cargo ships at some point or another.
