I wonder why places like Ukraine and Romania are not higher. I'd guess they would have more species than the Netherlands and Ireland. It's all the western countries, so I wonder if it's to do with the system of conservation, bird counting and reporting in those countries.
I think it's not conservation, Eastern European countries such as Romania and Ukraine have relatively large areas not disturbed by human activity. I would rather say that in the countries that made it to this quiz birdwatching and counting has far more tradition, and so the numbers are higher.
Birds are also more common in areas near the oceans and in the Netherlands birds rest while they fly from the north to the south and the other way around i think the same is for uk and ireland
Okay, I updated the quiz. I used data from ebird.org, in which bird sightings are submitted by users. Because places like Ukraine and Romania have less birders, the bird count is less on ebird. Thanks for the feedback!
Fun quiz! I am certain that the number of species is all about the number of birders. The UK has enormous numbers of birders (twitchers) who scour the countryside (and cityside) for birds every day. The same can be true of the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, and a few more.
