It's in the EU, and it participates in Eurovision, so it's in Europe, dammit.

Cyprus is geographically closer to Asia and infant closer to Africa than it is to Europe. The border between Europe and Asia goes south from the Bosphorus Strait. If you wanted to include Cyprus you would have to include the rest of Turkey.

Or we could acknowledge that Europe and Asia are not two separate continents by any logical physical geographic standard. And if that's the case, then Europe exists as a continent only in a cultural/historical sense, in which case Cyprus, Russia, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, etc. are all open for discussion.

Guys We should really just accept it as a trans-continental country. Both sides of this argument have good points, why can't they both be right. Tbh in some corner of the internet, someone has already probably figured out, Cyprus isn't mostly one, it is just mostly BOTH. We could just ask the quizmaster if we should start making it transcontinental.

1. Cyprus is culturally European, yes, but so is Canada. Nobody says Canada is in Europe.

2. Just because a country is in the EU, doesn't mean it's in Europe. By that definition, Switzerland isn't in Europe.

3. Cyprus is closer to Asia geographically.

For some reason, jetpunk has arbitrarily decided that, contrary to what all Europeans, and perhaps most crucially all Cypriots think, Cyprus is in Asia. It makes no sense, but there's no point trying to argue this anymore.

besides Australia, all EBU members are eligible, and in turn all European AND Mediterranean countries (roughly speaking) can be members. That's why Israel participates and why Morocco participated in the past.

In other words, Eurovision participance does not say much about European boundaries, despite the name.

Cyprus is european ethnically, religiously, culturally and politically. therefore for people who believe facts, cyprus in european....

but i get it there is some serious overlap with europe and asia..... why don't we just stuff classing them as separate continents and call it all eurasia for crying out loud... and a single america? so 5 continents, not 7.....

Gibraltar is an overseas territory. If it was across the Channel it would be in France. And its status as an overseas territory doesn't require it to be any predetermined distance from the rest of the UK.
+5

The part of Russia that dips down the furthest near Georgia is far east of Cyprus and Istanbul. That area should be considered Asia. Wikipedia doesn't help. They say Georgia is at the crossroads of Asia and Europe. That could mean, Montana is at the crossroads of the USA and Canada, yet it is defined as a part of USA. Why can't they be more specific in regards to countries in a continent? They say the Ural Mountains are the eastern border of Europe. Since they stop above Kazahkstan, but it's in Asia even though it is west of the Urals. Some maps show the Caucasus countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia as part of Europe. They are way to the east of Turkey, with Azerbaijan above Iran. If you drew a line at the Urals at about 60 degrees East lat, then the Middle East is all west of 60 degrees East lat.

Jetpunk quizzes list Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia in Asia, yet maps of Europe typically show these 3 in Europe. The Formula 1 European Grand Prix is in Baku, Azerbaijan

The Canaries are not part of Europe.
+1
Level 72
May 31, 2020
Lampedusa is officially part of Agrigento, a province in Sicily. Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and therefore not valid. Canary Islands are not geographically part of Europe and therefore not valid.

This is a geography quiz so above all the place has to be part of Europe geographically before you consider anything else. Obviously this is muddied a bit by politics because defining something as an 'overseas territory' is political but as long as you think of it first as a geography quiz, then it makes sense.

San marino is waay to high (about 43 53’), macedonia is allready on it. And vatican city and kosovo do not reach as far south as Bulgaria which is 41 14’ (not 41 15’ btw)

Vatican city is 41 54’ and kosovo 41 51’.

+2
Level 67
Jul 4, 2019
Quite clear to see on a map actually, measuring wast even necessary. And by the way, even more obvious to see that if San marino would be on there, so should Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, France, Andorra and even Romania and Monaco (which cut it a little closer and I did need to measure if they would beat san marino)

We can avoid all of these arguments by simply acknowledging that Europe/Asia is one continent geographically. Politically, we can continue the argument to separate them, as we do when we insist that Egypt is in the Middle East when, in fact, it is located in Africa. .
