When Brazzaville didn't work, I didn't think to try Kinshasa since they are right across the Congo from one another, so I figured they were North of the equator. Didn't dawn on me that Brazzaville was so small.

Yeah Brazzaville is under 2 million, probably will make this list in a decade or so

Weird that Cape Town did not make it ! Population 3.74 Million

Every equator quiz I take just adds further to the realization that I seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of where the equator actually is...

Hahaha! I felt the same way! I think I've taken every equator quiz about 5-10 times just so that I can learn through repetition. Now I think I have finally gained a vague idea of where it is.

...and the relatively few people who live south of the equator: about 800 million, or only about 10 to 12% of the human population.

Brazil is the China of the Southern Hemisphere, apparently.

Apparently Bob is anticipating a Chinese conquest of Indonesia and Brazil in the near future.

Looks like Cape Town would make this list as well. Just pending an update :-)

Your figures are SO WRONG when it comes to Brazilian cities. Salvador does not have fewer inhabitants than Recife and Porto Alegre. And I know what I'm talking about, I'm from Salvador.

The numbers are by metro area. Salvador could be bigger than Porto Alegre by the city proper metric, but Porto Alegre has a lot of larger cities around it, so it adds up and surpass Salvador.

You are mistaking city proper population for urban agglomeration population. Not to worry, happens very commonly in the comments section of this site.

Come on, that surprised me too. And Salvador is one of the next biggest with a 3,7M urban agglomeration according to citypopulation.

Singapore is the farthest south I have ever been, and very close to the equator, but still in the northern hemisphere.

Thank you. A (rare) educational quiz. I've been twice to Nairobi without realising that it's in the Southern hemisphere.,

The equator actually passes right through the middle of Kenya, leaving Nairobi just about 150km south of it. So don't be too hard on yourself! ;)
