For those who are wondering how Venezuela is still on the list keep in mind that it takes a long time for life expectancy to fall in the event of economic collapse. Education takes even longer to fall, since all the people with degrees still have them even if they can't get a job. Finally, Venezuela has a decent amount of oil income still. HDI doesn't measure how well that income actually reaches the people.

Thanks for clarification. I was really surprised to see Venezuela on this list.

Yeah. Never would have gotten it if South America didn't have such a small number of countries total.

It doesn't take very long for drastic situations to have an effect, and I don't know why you'd claim that. Just update the quiz:

http://hdr.undp.org/en/content/download-data (table 1)

Venezuela as of 2019 data is already below Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Ecuador and Suriname. Only Guyana is below Venezuela now (in South America).

I'd claim that because that's what the 2018 HDI report says. This quiz is on a two-year update schedule and will be updated when the 2020 report is released.

The 2020 HDI report was published a week ago, and Venezuela is now 11th out of 12 South American countries.

No more excuses.

Search "UN HDI report 2020" or similar.

There aren't hordes of Guyanese roaming the continent in search of food. I wonder how long Venezuela can maintain the lofty position of number 11.

Liechtenstein just has to be there, surely? And Qatar has the highest GDP in the world, so am surprised to see it missing from the Asia list.

Qatar also has literal slave labor right now, so I'm not surprised they're not here.

Well San Marino and Monaco should really not be on the list. In 2009 (year of their source), both had an HDI comparable to Singapore. This means both are most likely now at about 0.93 and thus AT MOST number 6 and 7 in Europe....

HDIs are going up generally. So, if anything, Monaco and San Marino would be higher.

Why Canada? They come in at 8th overall...

Or has this been updated since your comment?

they are first in north america, but yea behind europe and australia and singapore.

Still you dont always have to be first to say well done. 8th in a list of approx 197 is well done. "winning" isnt everything, only for people that like to brag. Doing well is what matters (I am talking with things in general not just about the quiz subject)? For instance on a climb of mount everest I wouldnt call the ones that didnt come first losers, it is still and achievement. Sometimes people are so focussed on that first place like it is all or nothing. Ok I'll stop ranting, or next I'll be on about the environment or something ;) (where the attitude often is, when you can 100% fix something ( but maybe 90%) why bother even trying)

Should taiwan not be 0.907? (all the others match with wikipedia so I assume that is the source you used)

Africa was a total crap shoot. I didn't even bother after going across the top.

I was like: "I did the whole of South-America, how didn't I find it?".. I had already said for myself that Venezuela was no use trying and it'd be ridiculous even putting it in. I already thought I was stupid when I put in Bolivia as a desperate answer. How wrong I was.

Africa is hard, but not pure pot luck.

A passing interest in current African affairs will help you pick out the success stories and avoid the horror stories.
