For those who are wondering how Venezuela is still on the list keep in mind that it takes a long time for life expectancy to fall in the event of economic collapse. Education takes even longer to fall, since all the people with degrees still have them even if they can't get a job. Finally, Venezuela has a decent amount of oil income still. HDI doesn't measure how well that income actually reaches the people.

Thanks for clarification. I was really surprised to see Venezuela on this list.

Yeah. Never would have gotten it if South America didn't have such a small number of countries total.

Liechtenstein just has to be there, surely? And Qatar has the highest GDP in the world, so am surprised to see it missing from the Asia list.

Qatar also has literal slave labor right now, so I'm not surprised they're not here.

Well San Marino and Monaco should really not be on the list. In 2009 (year of their source), both had an HDI comparable to Singapore. This means both are most likely now at about 0.93 and thus AT MOST number 6 and 7 in Europe....

HDIs are going up generally. So, if anything, Monaco and San Marino would be higher.
