The Mediterranean has been a crucial body of water throughout history, hosting many great civilisations and states since antiquity. Although its importance has diminished during the era of globalisation, with other waterways around the world rising in prominence, there is still a large population which continues to exist around the Mediterranean Sea.

I used city proper for this quiz with all populations coming from citypopulation.de's city proper projections for each respective country. The only exception is Greece, whose source is here. While I find that city proper tells more about the way lines are drawn to administer, rather than the people who actually live in any given urban area, I tried to keep a level of consistancy throughout my data without making subjective decisions.

I should note that bordering the Mediterranean is counted by the city's official boundaries. An excellent example of this is Rome. The urban area is all located inland, but the 10th Municipi of Rome swallows coastal Ostia. On the other hand, technically the city limits of Athens do not touch the sea, however this is because Athens' city limits are quite restrictive, and I wouldn't have felt good about excluding Athens from this sort of quiz. There were a couple of other subjective decisions regarding which cities I chose to include, but overall I'm happy with my decisions. Please note that data from Libya post-1980's is not reliable (Wikipedia claims Misrata has between 400-800 thousand residents in seperate parts of the article, for instance) So there are likely more cities in Libya of 100 thousand or more which I simply cannot account for.
