Now this one's a real challenge. I probably won't do another one, otherwise the challenge will rise exponentially.

Translations may not be perfect, so feel free to correct them! Few words translate perfectly from language to language, and while I did my best to research the grammar in certain languages to make the highlighting more accurate, it will never be perfect.

Just as a hint, pay attention to which countries colonised the countries that speak these languages, if you know what to look for this can help you loads (especially in loanwords).

Incredible! I love this quiz! I had an idea somewhat like this, but I never felt like making this. I enjoyed this a lot, especially since you put Telugu :D I can confirm that the sentence is correct. I got all of them :)

Nice! Your blog on Telugu actually inspired me to add it :D

Good thing that the sentence is correct, too. I'm a little surprised at how accurate Google Translate can be, so long as you remove all ambiguity from the sentence.

I put English in again so that everyone knew what the sentence meant, and as a sort of a free answer, but it looks like it is easy to misclick or get it wrong, I do that all the time on mobile (or perhaps someone clicks through and guesses all the answers, haha).

YAYY TELUGU REPRESENTATION!!!

Thanks for adding it! i read the telugu sentence first and i was so confused what viyanna means until i realized it's vienna lol

Wow, your second one came out fast! Definitely harder than the last one. I was especially confounded by the Eastern European ones. I also feel cheated somewhat by South Africa--I was fully expecting it to be an African language and only remembered that Afrikaans is also a common language in the country after I put in the answer :/

Well I did all the work already when I made the map, so all I needed where the flags and the sentences :D - (I originally made the map considering making a behemoth guess-all-the-languages-I-could-mangle-with-Google Translate quiz but I scrapped the idea for now).

I realised while making the quiz just how hard it would be! I almost chose a South African language with click consonants (Xhosa, Zulu), but in writing the click consonants aren't obvious, so I decided to test people on their Afrikaans instead. There are some really neat, yet obscure clues too (for example the Tagalog sentence uses a loanword from Spanish "concierto").

Feeling bad for Brazil don’t be in the map, with Portuguese being represented, although I love this series.

YOU’LL BE ARRESTED...

...

...YOU STOLE ALL MY PRAISES

(Thinking now, Mozambique, Angola, blah blah aren’t represented also, so... 😐🤔

Nem reparei... apesar de que pensando nesse ponto de vista, pode ser por causa do uso de inglês e francês... mas faz sentido agora. Menos mal kkkkk

Thank you! You're right that is Telugu. Mongolian is a very interesting language, it is not related to Russian, but they replaced the vertical Mongolian script with the Cyrillic due to Russian influence (except in Inner Mongolia, China).

i beg you make another one these are sick, only slight problem i have is that it is roman letters, instead of original for some, which ig could be another quiz but i think it is better to use original letters cos romanization is disputed in a lot of languages
+1
Level 70
Aug 21, 2022
Thank you! I agree it is often disputed, but if I put them in their original scripts it will be about the scripts not the languages (it also allows me to add Kazakh and Ukrainian in the same quiz without it being unfair :D )

Maybe IPA would be the best if enough people understand it, though I like it like this. I could write some of them in IPA for curiosity.

This is how the Telugu sentence would sound if read clearly:

/ˈʋɐt͡ʃːeː ˈʋäːɾɐm ˈneːnu ˈʋiːjɐnnäːloː ˈd͡ʒɐɾigeː ˈkäːt͡ʃeːɾiːloː ɐˈkäːɾɖijɐn ˈʋäːjist̪äːnu/

And this is how it would be pronounced more casually:

/ˈɔt͡ʃːeː ˈʋäːɾə̃ʊ̯ ˈneːnʊ ˈʋiːjɛnnäːloː ˈzɐɾɪge ˈkäːt͡ʃeːɾiːloː ɐˈkɒːɾɖijən ˈʋäːjɪst̪äː/

That's very interesting, I appreciate that you included the difference in careful and in casual speech. One potential problem with the IPA is that it will be different depending on which dialect you write in, although it makes sense just to put the prestige dialect of each language (i.e. Parisian French)

I feel like a whole quiz could be dedicated to guessing languages based on a sample in IPA, although of course it would only appeal to the more hardcore language fans haha :)

In Hungarian, "harmonikán" does not belong to "concert". Harmonika meant accordion.
