Politics and religion have less correlation than people like to imagine. Most American Democrats are Christian, for example. California also has a large number of immigrants from religious countries in Latin America and elsewhere. That's all I can tell you, I am not American and there are holes in my 'America-knowledge'. I find the data fairly trustwrothy, although in comparing the US to Europe there are other cultural and societal differences that might show themselves and influence the data.
