Same here! How did Norway manage to get more medals than the number of events, did two Norwegians arrive joint third at an event or what?

Sixteen events means 48 medals (provided there are no 'dead heats').

In the 500m speed skating event, there was a tie for 3rd, so two bronze medals were awarded. (one to a Finn, and the other to a Norwegian), so there were 49 awarded.
