Finally updated - with the most recent data and fixing placement on the map. I used a Google Maps overlay to place the cities so everything should be about as accurate as it can be, to within a couple miles.

Some of these populations need to be updated.

The numbers are from the most recent data shown on citypopulation.de, from 2016.

There is now updated data on citypopulation.de here although Melbourne has now overtaken Sydney (2020 estimates). Great quiz!

Brilliant quiz - I am satisfied with my knowledge of my own country. Annoyed I missed Lismore and Raymond Terrace, though.

How is Taree north of Port Macquarie? Fix this please.

It looks like Taree and Grafton are misplaced. Taree should be roughly between Forster and Port Macquarie, and Grafton should be roughly between Coffs Harbour and Ballina.

Taree and Grafton have been put where Macksville and Kempsey actually are. Kempsey isn't on the list, but is big enough to be.

Kurri Kurri is marked as Northeast of Maitland, but it's Southwest.

And some of the places are just citypopulation.de weirdnesses, like Crafers, SA which has a population of <2000, and shouldn't be on the list at all.

Much better to use the Australian Bureau of Statistics' list of Significant Urban Areas: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Australia_by_population#Significant_urban_areas_by_population

Love this quiz! However, perhaps a map with a larger scale of detail and more accurate town locations would make this even better. eg. the Location of Kiama in relation to Nowra seems off

Yesss! It got spotlighted! This is one of my favourite quizzes!

Just to reiterate what has already been said, some of the locations are way off. Orange, for example, is way closer to Sydney than where you have it. A little more time would have been good too.

While many, many cities are not correctly marked on this map, Orange isn't one of them. It's due north of Canberra, and WNW of Sydney, as marked.

Northern NSW, though, is a dog's breakfast. Grafton (100s of km too far south) and Taree (100s of km too far N) are completely wrong, and Morisset (too far E), Kurri Kurri (too far NE), Raymond Terrace (too far N), Nelson Bay (too far NE), Singleton (too far NW) and Dubbo (too far NE) are significantly wrong. Maitland, Cessnock, Tamworth, Armidale, Coffs Harbour, Ballina and Lismore are all slightly wrong. Only Forster and Port Macquarie are reasonably accurate.

Southern NSW/Northern Vic/ACT is not much better. Kiama (too far S), Canberra (too far SW), Wagga, Albury, Griffith and Wangaratta (all too far W) are all significantly out.

In Victoria, Moe and Warragul are significantly too far N, and Bacchus Marsh is significantly too far W (it's 5 times closer to Melton than Balllarat). Sunbury, Melton and Ballarat are too far from Melbourne.

any chance victor harbour could be spelt the australian way rather than victor harbor?

Level 66

The Australian town is spelt Victor Harbor, so that doesn't need fixing, though the typical Australian spelling of the word 'harbour' could at least be accepted as a type-in :)

Victor Harbor has always spelled without the U since the 1900s – and not a single sign uses harbour with a u (even outside proper names, from personal experience).

The update with accurate locations is great, although Lismore has been set to Lismore, Victoria with a population of just 400 (rather than Lismore, NSW). Took me a second to work out what town could possibly be showing up there but all in all good quiz.
