Countries that aren't countries

Can you name the things which may be countries in some sense, but not in the 'proper' sense?
All answers are either constituent countries, partly/unrecognised regions that claim independence, or places that are neither of these things but sometimes wrongly called countries.
This list only covers a some of the more famous, and a few less famous examples.
