Countries with extra gender identities

Many cultures recognise two genders, but some recognise three or even more than that. To mark IDAHOT-2016 let's learn about some of the different countries and cultures that have different or special gender identities that we might no be familiar with.
Terms are of special gender identities specific to these cultures that may be assigned or self-assigned. This information is interpreted to the best of my ability from Wikipedia articles. This list is likely of just a few gender variants from around the world.
Some of these gender identities may still be very much in use today, though others may have diminished over time (perhaps with influx of western culture through colonisation).
Characteristics & basis of these extra genders can be very different between these cultures, based on physical, behavioural or other attributes. Some are legally recognised, while others may be only informally recognised
A few answers are not independent countries.
