Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and Moldova are all in the top 20 of alcohol consumption yet aren't in this list. In all cases but especially Moldova a vast amount of this consumption is in the form of vodka.

Yeah, the idea that the UAE exceeds the Baltic States in vodka consumption is implausible.

And, in fact, if the Quartz data were taken to be comprehensive, the average Russian drinks at least 100 times as much vodka as the average Estonian (since the Quartz chart goes clear down to Venezuela at 0.18 without any of the Baltic States making an appearance).

Greetings lovely quizzers. I would like to clarify that Quartz's data come from Euromonitor, and that their unit of measurement is shots per month per person (vodka equivalent to 1.5 fluid ounces). Euromonitor provided per capita data in litres which was converted to fluid ounces and then shots. Furthermore a report by WHO showed that the United Arab Emirates has nearly double the global average of alcohol consumption, and this report excluded tourists. There may be numerous statistical or practical reasons as to why other specific countries do not appear on this list (perhaps skewed ratio of legally vs. illegally purchased/brewed alcohol). I welcome you to find your own sources, but my only concern is accurately relaying the data of my source. Though it may be disappointing/confusing not to see Moldova on this list, I can only advise one to write a strongly worded letter to whomever conducts the survey! As ever I hope all quizzers enjoy this quiz and thank you for taking it ^_^

there are a lot of western expats in the Emirates who may turn to vodka to deal with their loneliness
