That one is going on an April Fools quiz in the future. A handful of people declared themselves a republic, controlled an area of land smaller than Sonoma county, picked out a flag, and then dissolved. If that's independence, we're going to have to add a lot more countries to our current list. Sealand has better claims to statehood.

Vermont as a country is pretty sketchy. I guess it might be technically true but it was more of a no man's land that broke away after the revolution started. The colonies of New Hampshire and New York had bigger things on their plates. At various times Vermont aligned with the British with the hope that after the rebellion was squashed they would be an independent colony and as a 14th state of America. There founding documents refer to itself as a state and commonwealth and the leader as governor. No other country recognized it as an independent state.

You're probably right. The complaining if we left it off would be too much though. I'm sure 99% of people will just answer Texas for that one.

as someone who has an entire side of his Ohana from Hawaii, that is BS that fewer than 25% of adults are obese. The islands are FULL of obese folks.

I have never been to Hawaii, but I was surprised by Hawaii too because I know that Pacific Islanders usually rank among the most obese people in the world. Not sure whether that is genetic or the fact that so much of their food is likely filled with preservatives because it needs to be imported so far (probably a combination of both). Either way, the fact that there are only three states in which less than a quarter of the population is obese is horrifying.

Some sources say about 10-11% are Pacific Islanders, and about 24% are mixed race.
Causes of obesity in Polynesia probably is a combination evolutionary strategies to survive famine, more cultural acceptance of fat people, supplying Native populations with cheap carbohydrates and other processed foods by the colonizing governments while suppressing native traditional food, (pounding poi was just recently legalized in Hawaii.) car culture.

For the states with fewer than 25% obesity, Massachusetts is no longer valid https://www.americashealthrankings.org/explore/annual/measure/Obesity/state/HI

Massachusetts dropped down to nr 7. First (lowest percentage of obese people) is Colorado with 22.6%, second Hawaii with 23.8%, and runner up with 25.1% is California>

Most obese is West-virginia with 38.1% of adults.
