Italy is often mistaken as a country with little linguistic diversity with Italian as the only spoken language. The reality of the situation is substantially more complicated. In fact Italy has languages from several different language groups. The inspiration came from misconception.

well, not exactly, in MOST of these places, MOST people speak a standard Italian based on the Florentine dialect of the Tuscan language. But in these regions there are a large number of people who speak a LANGUAGE (not dialect) which is different from that standard Italian.

A lot more leeway would be appreciated for Emiliano-Romagnolo. For example, wikipedia lists it as "Emilian-Romagnol"
