Start at this obelisk that appears to be the center of the city, but actually isn't.

Travel due east along the mall to this center of the legislative branch, as well as the ACTUAL center of the city.

Head northeast for less than a mile to this transportation hub

Take the Metro red line a few stops west to this major circle with a statue and fountain in the center

Walk along Massachusetts Avenue for a while to experience this linear international area.

Cross Rock Creek and go west to enter this historic neighborhood with a major university named after it.

If you walk along the water, you'll stroll past this hotel complex that was the talk of the nation in the early 1970s. Half the name still comes up every time there's a new scandal...

Find your way across the Potomac River to this undeveloped island named after two presidents. Technically it's only named after one of them, but you get the point...

If you walk up the hill to Rosslyn, you can take the Silver Line Metro (almost) all the way out to this airport, the largest in the region.

You might have some trouble with the FAA, but maybe you can take a short flight back towards the city, ending at this airport much closer to downtown.

A short walk northwest through Arlington will get you to this headquarters of the Defense Department

Take a contemplative stroll through Arlington Cemetary, ending at this white marble tomb that is guarded around the clock.

Going back across the Memorial Bridge, you have a view of the back of this Memorial, most frequently seen on some currency.

Nearby is this irregularly shaped aquatic feature, famously surrounded by blossoming cherry trees in the spring.

The first museum of your visit, appropriately located on Raoul Wallenberg Place, isn't part of the Smithsonian, but is an extremely educational, if rather depressing, reminder of history.

Directly across the Mall is the Smithsonian's newest opening, with a much more modern-looking exterior.

Just south of this museum is a Plaza (and Metro station) named for the city's first planner, whose name doesn't sound very "American."
