You should clarify that this is teams that purport to represent parts or the whole of NY state by virtue of their name. When you say teams whose stadium is in NJ you immediately bring the Devils into the mix.

That doesn't matter. The San Francisco 49ers play in Santa Clara which is in Santa Clara County.

Abutting Santa Clara (city) and the county seat of Santa Clara County is San Jose. The NHL's San Jose Sharks play there.

Should the 49ers be the Santa Clara 49ers or should the San Jose Sharks be the San Francisco Sharks?

Quiz instructions don't foreclose discussion about a topic. Neither the Jets nor Giants play, practice, or are headquartered in NY yet it's in both names. The quiz title should really be something like "Teams with New York Cities in the Name" since arguably several of these aren't "from New York state." Seems to be a metro area issue, since the 49ers are really a Bay Area team (stadium and facilities in Santa Clara), just as most of these "New York" teams (including the NJ Devils) are NYC metro area teams regardless of the state.

The original name of the Knicks was the Knickerbockers and that name was never dismissed, the team and media just shortened it to Knicks.

I tried Knickerbockers for fun and it didn't work, which is fine.

There is a difference. Whereas the Knicks comment is correct regarding that team, The baseball team has always officially been just the "Mets". The confusion is that the team is operated by the "New York Metropolitan Baseball Club".

How are the Devils more of a New York team than the Sabres? The Devils play in New Jersey and have "New Jersey" in their name, while the Sabres are named for and play in a city in New York.

Yes, I read the instructions, but consistency has to apply. It specifically says "New York state"--state in bold type, then says "even if the stadium is in New Jersey". No logic to that one! Gotta be consistent. And to top it off, what about the Devils? I know, I know...."New Jersey Devils, as opposed to "New York Giants" and "New York Jets". Still though, consistency must apply.
