I think you might have confused "language" with "dialect".
+5
Level 65

Dialects are languages.

Level 70

Maybe there is another world in which France is officially Picard-speaking and French as we know it is considered just a dialect of Picard.

There are a lot of opinions about if a lot of languages are really languages or really dialects, so I followed the ones that I considered. Sorry if you don't agree with some of them, I think that is a difficult and tricky subject even for linguists.

100% agree. Also disputed so much so that some countries don’t even acknowledge certain countries let alone their language.

Maybe allow "Circassian" as an alternative for "Adyge". I got it, but I almost passed over it after putting in "Circassian" first.

Yeah, you are right, I will add it as an alternative both to Adyge and Kabardian, thanks

Could use more clarification. I'm pretty sure Latin for example has more than 1000 L2 speakers. The quiz doesn't mention anywhere it has to have 1000 native speakers, just speakers. And perhaps it counts L2 speakers of some sort in some cases, I'm pretty sure English doesn't have 700 million native speakers.
+3
Level 64
Jul 30, 2021
Yes, many of these make the list only with L2 numbers, not L1 numbers.
+1
Level 95

And if we're including L2 speakers, there are a lot of languages which are not on this list an most certainly should be. (Chinese, Urdu, Persian, etc...)
+1
Level 73
Jun 10, 2022
Yes, but these aren't European languages. It doesn't matter if many Europeans speak Chinese or Urdu as L2. They didn't originate in Europe nor are they spoken natively within the borders of Europe.

If you're going to separate dialects, then Serbo-Croatian should be separated into its four standard varieties, in my opinion: Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin, and Serbian.
+2
Level 43
Jun 10, 2022
I'm pretty sure that Khanty and Selkup are not European languages because their speakers live behind the Ural mountains in Asia.

Level 72

I like the concept a lot, but you could use some cleaner delineation as to what counts as a dialect, at least for ones that don't get accepted type-ins for more common languages.

For example, Ripuarian isn't accepted when typing German or Franconian, and also isn't accepted when typing any of its sub-dialects, like Kölsch/Colognian. It's hard to guess exactly which level of dialect is the one you are looking for.

When you've delineated something into a few dialects, but accept them all as answers given the most known one, I have basically no problem with that. Others may disagree, but I'm usually of the opinion that "the more type-ins, the better".

If you're separating dialects then Viennese, Styrian and Bavarian should be here.
