From Wikipedia, West Germany is the English name of the Federal Republic of Germany. Also according to Wikipedia, the official English name of Germany right now is the Federal Republic of Germany. West Germany was not the official name of the Federal Republic of Germany but was the English name to differentiate between the two Germanies. The official name did not change when East Germany, or the German Democratic Republic, was annexed into Germany. A person born in Würzburg in 1978 and a person born in Würzburg in 2017 would have the same country on their passport. The name of Germany did not change when East Germany was annexed much like the name of Canada did not change when Newfoundland was incorporated into the rest of Canada.
