There were 11 pharaohs called Rameses (predictably named I to XI like all good monarchies), so thanks for not holding out for the specific number :) I checked on Wikipedia and there are more spelling variations for this guy listed there.
Great quiz. The athlete sticks out like a sore thumb though. Baseball is a sport with very little presence outside of North America. All the other questions could reasonably be considered 'general knowledge' for your average western quizer. The seventh question is incredibly hard for those of us who aren't from North America. My analogy would be, what chance would a North American have of getting a question about a cricketer or a Rugby player!?
Why not change it to a question about Walter Raleigh, Robespierre, Rutherford, Rabin, (Condoleezza) Rice, or even Babe Ruth.
Just a suggestion to help those of us who don't live in North America.
That isn't exactly true. While baseball is a favorite in the USA, along with practically any other sporting competition, it is popular in many other countries also. The very first International Baseball Federation World Cup games were played in London in 1938 where the British team beat the team from the US four out of five games to win the Cup. Baseball is also popular in Asia, South America, parts of Europe, and Australia.
It's certainly not cherry-picking to say baseball is popular in Central America, South America, and parts of Asia. It's hugely popular in places there. But it is true that the Jackie Robinson question is probably inaccessible to to quiztakers elsewhere.
When that photo was taken they were actors. You must be younger or don't watch old movies. They - especially Ronald - were big in the '40s and '50s. I remember "Win just one for the Gipper" from Knute Rockne, and Hellcats of the Navy, and Kings Row. He hosted the G.E. Theater on TV, and he was also president of the Screen Actors Guild during the infamous McCarthy era. During his time as SAG president (when he was an ultra-liberal) he helped secure income from residuals for actors which made a big difference in their incomes, and still does today.
Well it must have embarrassed this person or they wouldn't be snidely disparaging the quiz while implying that somehow the person in question is not renowned (even though the majority got it right) in order to excuse their own ignorance.
He is not renowned worldwide, and the fact that it is the 2nd least guess answer is telling something 44% atm). (And I wonder how much correct answers would be left if you subtract people from the usa and their direct neighbours) Good to learn about him though, but no need to warp things to your own opinion/preference. (Just because you know him and think everybody should, doesnt make someone renown (worldwide))
First, I don't see the words "world wide" anyplace in the title or caveats. Second, the 2013 movie about him, "42" had a foreign box office gross of two and a half million, - admittedly that's not great, but more than a few people outside of the US should know about him. I'd never heard of the Reichstag before this quiz but I'm not complaining about it being on the quiz. You didn't complain about revolver, so how are we supposed to know which "American things" are well known around the world and which ones aren't? I think WolfCam has a great mix of answers on this quiz and only four relate to America. That is four too many for some people.
I couldn't care less about baseball, that boring pastime that is popular elsewhere in the world. So my first thought was similar to yours.
But it turns out that Mr Robinson here was part of a big thing going on in America back then, as WolfCam explained above. So let's admit that we learned something new today.
Young people, don't take your freedom, paid vacation leave, or afro-american pro-baseball players for granted. Someone had to fight for such things. That's history alright!
I have to admit I had no idea who the actors. When the names came up, I thought "Oh yeah, I recognise him now. Not his wife though." Also the baseball one was an unknown. Although I think I have heard of his name before. The rest, easy.
