I guessed pretty hate machine, the downward spiral, the fragile, and with teeth, decided that the users at rateyourmusic have awful taste, then gave up.
I think there's a very strong case for OK Computer as the greatest album of all time, and I'd rank Kid A pretty high as well. Although do I think the list as a whole feels very one note and too concentrated among a few artists.
Radiohead are this good. But I don't think OK Computer deserves to be even considered as the "greatest album of all time." Nowhere close. Everything they made after is better in my opinion.
I really like OK Computer's first half; the second half's pretty whatever aside from "No Surprises" and maybe "Lucky". And Kid A never did much for me; I much prefer The Bends.
this has to be one of the oddest all time album lists I have ever seen! it includes artists that have hardly made any splash on the music scene which tells me the survey was suspect in that the pool of who decided was the best albums had to be tiny. I know any list like this is subjective but the lack of what other lists (rolling stone magazine, Apple Music, MTV, Grammys, etc etc,) list as the best of all time is what makes this list very suspect.
I doubt the pool is as small as you think it is. Rate your music, while very much an echo chamber of no-life music nerds (which is what leads to some of the weird results), is by far the most popular music rating site on the internet, and all of the albums on this list have been voted on by over 10,000 people (the Stevie Wonder one is the lowest, with just over 12,000 ratings). The actual list gives a lot more data on why things were ranked the way they are.
Making a “splash in the music scene” is pretty vague. Are you referring to music that was unsuccessful in the mainstream? Music aficionados generally don’t want to listen to the same mainstream, cookie cutter music all the time. And keep in mind that the Grammys are just a reflection of what the music industry thinks is good music. Listening to some of this music, it’s pretty clear that these albums are selected by people who see music as expressive art, not something just for entertainment.
The all-time chart has changed a lot since I first started using the site in ~2014. Hard to believe that To Pimp a Butterfly has risen all the way to #2, and Madvillainy to #7. Hip-hop used to be not as well-respected on the site.
Thanks a ton for this quiz. I’m listening to Madvillainy because of this list. I used to be a DJ and must’ve gone through 100,000 singles in my time. Some of the music is way too pretentious for my taste, but some of this is amazing music I’ve never heard!
thanks for taking it! rym can def be overly pretentious at times but its def a great way to find to new music, and to keep track of what you've listened to. also madvillainy slaps, glad this list got you to listen to it :)
