Can you please accept falconing instead of falconry? If you Google falconing you will see plenty of hits for the sport.

Because it says "showing results for falconry" the proper term.

That fact that people consider hunting any animal a sport nowadays is...somewhat troubling.

But hunting is still allowed in England, just not of foxes.

Isn't the UK overrun with foxes? Maybe they should bring it back.

The UK is also overrun with people, perhaps we should hunt them instead! :-)

The diving clue can also refer to BASE Jumping, and for the hockey clue, all I could think of was Easter egg hunting...
+2
Level 62
Mar 19, 2015
I thought of base jumping, bungee jumping, rappelling -- it's a very vague clue.
+1
Level 67

Agreed, almost everything comes to mind besides flying. Even after seeing the answer I dont associate diving with cliffs.. but with water. Usually diving of a cliff is a kind of fatal thing..i tried basejumping, bungeejumping paragliding, hangglidig, and several others

yeah, I typed in base jumping as well..'wingsuit' base jumping is another one-- fascinating to watch but incredibly dangerous IMO.

Yeah, I tried base jumping. Only got diving by guessing random sports. It's a terrible clue.

I'm Canadian and have been playing hockey since (well, as with many, I have no conscious memory of ever having not played hockey)... I have also watched tons of hockey all my life. And I have never heard "biscuit in the basket" until right now. Maybe this is some particular announcer's catch phrase?

that surprises me, I'm a canadian who plays hockey and I hear that phrase all the time

I never even noticed the clue, since I typed hockey right away before reading any of the clues. That one is... odd, to be sure. I don't think I would have gotten it based on the clue.

The clue for darts is misleading in that it makes you think the british version is called something different than the American version. The clue should probably be worded as "pubs and bars" instead of "british pubs"

"Hockey" is played around the world on a field and definitely uses a ball. "Ice Hockey" is played in North America and parts of eastern Europe and uses a puck
+1
Level 43
Jun 6, 2014
Wiki says "Hockey is a family of sports in which two teams play against each other by trying to maneuver a ball or a puck into the opponent's goal using a hockey stick. In many areas, one sport (typically field hockey or ice hockey[1]) is generally referred to simply as hockey."
+1
Level 83
Sep 10, 2016
But seeing as this is an international website, it should specify ice hockey.
+1
Level 59

Should specify which version of hockey in the answer, just for clarity's sake if nothing else.

Level 66

Since the quiz is "Sports that don't use a ball," if you are aware that ice hockey is a thing that exists, you can infer that the quiz is asking for that particular kind of hockey.

And as always with sport quizzes, I take issue with the inclusion of darts. The OED defines sport as 'an activity involving physical exertion and skill'. Granted, darts is a skillful pastime, but where is the exertion?

Are you referring to the Oxford Dictionary? I don't think a dictionary should be used to define things. It just explains them. Wikipedias source of definition (Sport Accord international sports federations) lists these categories for sports: Primarily physical, primarily mind, primarily motorised, primarily coordination and primarily animal-supported. That's why chess for example is considered a Sport (primarily mind) too.

I agree with you in reagrds to darts. But can you not say the same for a lot of "sports"? Golf for a start. Yes, the real top players are fantastic athletes but would anyone argue John Daly, Colin Montgomery and Darren Clarke were athletes? Then there's Miguel Angel Jiminez, who 'warms up' by doing a few gentle stretches whilst smoking a cigar!

The definition of what is and isn't required for something to be a sport is pretty subjective. One person's sport is another person's pass-time (or waste of time lol).

Don't set me off about Fox Hunting being referred to as a sport.....I think the term becomes blood sport. Not sure where the skill comes into it? Horse riding is the limit of skill involved.

I'd like to point out that there are several variations of fencing, only one of which uses an epee. Other version of the sport include foil and sabre, both of which use the eponymous swords. There might be a better clue for those who aren't familiar with epee fencing.

I think the gymnastics clue can be made more inclusive. You've either heard of the person or not, and there's no way to reason your way to the answer aside from guessing a bunch of ball-less sports.

Something like "includes rings, vault, and parallel bars" or some variation thereof might be an improvement.
