Obviously any list like this is going to be highly flawed and completely subjective... but... even given some horrifically glaring omissions, puzzling inclusions, and odd ordering.... this isn't altogether a terrible list. At least they got South Park and Team America on here. Nice to see the nod to Duck Soup, as well.

South Park movie worked great , as a big fan then I wasn't expecting it to be as good , but it managed to keep up the standards of the series.

Agree with all of the films already mentioned... they should have been included over some that made it on here. I'd also add Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure & Bogus Journey, The Princess Bride, Scrooged, Rushmore, O Brother Where Art Thou... maybe The Great Outdoors, Tommy Boy, Harold & Kumar... so many...

If I try to think of the one movie that had me laughing the hardest non-stop start to finish I think it would have to be The Blair Witch Project. The other people in the theater kept giving me the evil eye but I couldn't stop it was so friggin stupid.

I was a film major in college, so I've seen a lot of these lists. Other than the glaring omission of Animal House and the questionable ordering, I'd say it's one of the best I've seen. It leans a little too heavy on hip new comedies that likely won't stand the test of time (Pineapple Express?), but it's good to see some new classics on here in lieu of the old and outdated comedies like Sullivan's Travels that usually litter these lists to give an air of credibility to the writers. Some of them, like Blazing Saddles and Some Like It Hot, are still great watches, but most of them just don't hold up. And they're certainly not as funny as Old School.

+2
Level 82
Mar 11, 2013
I think Airplane! is probably the best example of the odd ordering here. I mean... it's a fine movie... but #1 funniest film ever? That's a pretty big stretch. Personally I'd put Spaceballs over it and that didn't even make the list. Also, I don't think I've ever met anyone who thought Life of Brian (another fine movie) was funnier than Holy Grail. but... whatever... :)

+2
Level 88
Jul 25, 2018
Wombat, remember me from the convention? A lot of us think The Life of Brian was better thought out than The Holy Grail or the sporadic Meaning of Life. The Life of Brian is as focused as Minty Python could conceivably get for more than 30 seconds. Yeah, so then they threw in aliens with a rescue from certain death just to torpedo me 39 years on.

It's a shame that an Adam Sandler film made it onto the list. But I'm glad to see Four Lions on there, although judging from the fact that only 3% got it I'm guessing it wasn't particularly popular outside of the UK!

I really don't understand this mentality - "Anyone who likes a thing that I don't like has nothing valuable to contribute. I refuse to continue, but will voice my unconstructive opinion here anyway."

We all have different tastes. I imagine everyone found something on this list that is not at all funny to them. Some of us got over it.

I watched Blazing Saddles as a college student when it first came out. I thought it was the funniest movie I'd ever seen. I watched it twenty years later with my kids and thought it was the dumbest movie I'd ever seen. I think age and life experience makes a difference on what seems humorous. I should watch it again to see what difference another twenty years or so has made.

Great, funny movie, but they edit (censor) it so much when showing it on TV that is sacrifices all of the satire and social commentary. It is completely unfunny and pointless like this, and I don't understand why they bother to show it.

What a godawful list. There are some good movies on it (although many of them are ranked too low), but then there are a lot of absolute garbage films on it too. About the only nice thing I can say about this list is that at least they didn't include Fargo.

Level 82
Mar 20, 2018
Well there's plenty I disagree with here, but I have trouble faulting number one. I can't think of another movie that has a greater density of laugh-out-loud jokes than Airplane! And it is endlessly quotable. The rest of the top five I pretty much agree with, except for maybe Anchorman, which I liked, but wouldn't consider number two of all time good. I'd be tempted to swap it with Dr Strangelove. It's sad so few people guessed In the Loop, because it is a truly brilliant movie and spectacularly funny. In Bruges is also not getting as much love as it deserves. Personally I'd consider it amongst my all time favourite movies of any genre, but this list doesn't ask for the best films that are comedies, but the funniest comedies, and in straight up hilarity stakes the likes of Airplane beat In Bruges hands down.

I don't think anything but Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb should be accepted. That's the title and cheaters shouldn't get points for only getting only 25% of the title right.

So glad to see' Withnail and I', 'In the Loop', 'Dr Strangelove', 'This is Spinal Tap' and 'Clerks' here, so sad to see that Adam Sandler garbage here. 'The Castle', 'Manhattan', 'Les Fugitifs', 'Burn After Reading', 'O Brother Where Art Thou', 'LA Story', 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels', 'Micmacs', 'Delicatessen', 'Napoleon Dynamite' and 'A Night at the Opera' are all sadly missing. I also don't remember 'In Bruges' or 'Kingpin' being particularly funny, even though they were both good movies.

Definitely some good inclusions here and questionable ones. I haven't seen quite a few of these but I have enjoyed most of the ones I have. Happy Gilmore is far from my favorite on the list but it is quite a fun movie. The Jerk, Airplane, both Monty Pythons, Blazing Saddles, The Naked Gun, Shaun of the Dead, Caddyshack, and Dumb and Dumber are great inclusions. I definitely disagree with Groundhog Day, A Fish Called Wanda, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Young Frankenstein being there though. I am glad Princess Bride is not on the list but find it unfortunate that neither of the Hot Shots movies, Johnny Dangerously, Spaceballs, Animal House, or Uncle Buck made the list among other movies.

This is probably the worst "top X movies list" I have ever seen... And while at it, I really don't understand American obsession with the "hilarity" of "Anchorman". I have seen it with two friends a few years ago. All three of of us haven't laughed once for the whole duration of the movie. We were just completely flabbergasted by the absolute lack of any kind of humor in something claiming to be a comedy. I am absolutely shocked to see it at No 2...
