Astana is the capital of post-Soviet Kazakhstan, but the capital of the Kazakh S.S.R. was Alma-Ata, since renamed as Almaty. And Chisinau was known back then (and, wiki confirms, is still known now) as Kishinev.

In 2019, Kazakhstan renamed Astana to Nur-Sultan, but they changed it from Almaty to Astana way back in 1998. They renamed it to Nur-Sultan to honor their long-serving president, Nursultan Nazarbayev (Нұрсұлтан Назарбаев in Kazakh).
