In the US Civil War, yes, this was the case, but according to this metric, these states are 'Southern'. See this Wikipedia article.

Maybe I am just too much of a Northerner to understand, but I have no idea how people can claim that Kentucky isn't the South. It feels very Southern to me.

As a non American person it's really hard to understand why Delaware is called "south" while both Alaska and New Mexico are called "west", it makes pretty no sense to my mind

The American South is conceptualized mostly as the old Confederacy - former Slave states south of the Mason-Dixon line (Maryland's northern border)... though calling Delaware a Southern state is a pretty big stretch... but it also wouldn't be called "North East" which is usually thought of as New England. It's more "Mid-Atlantic".. but the quiz author made the decision to only use 4 categories. Slavery was technically legal in Delaware but the practice was not at all widespread, and the state never seceded to join the Confederacy. It was also never considered part of New England. So, like I said, it's in a squishy middle-area if these are the only 4 categories you're using.

As for the "west"... this region of the United States is usually conceptualized as the western frontier... area that had not been organized into states, for the most part, until after the Civil War. Including Alaska and Hawaii is a little weird. Even though they fit this description I just gave they're not usually thought of as part of the Old West. But again, if you're only using these 4 categories they don't really belong anywhere else.

New Mexico would usually be put into the category of "SouthWest," along with Arizona, and sometimes parts of or all of other bordering states, but if you're only using the categories of West, South, Midwest, and Northeast... then it could belong to either of the first two, but usually wouldn't be called a Southern state even though it's geographically south.

Check out this helpful map, which illustrates how definitions of the American "south" vary from source to source. The states in dark red are the most canonical core of the American "South," while those in tan might be grouped in with them but usually are not.

and as Mensualite illuminates above, more regions could also be helpful. Perhaps... "Mid-Atlantic" for Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey... "Southwest" for New Mexico and Arizona... "Northwest" for Washington and Oregon and maybe Idaho... "Non-Contiguous" for Alaska and Hawaii. Just a suggestion.

this quiz will never gain recognition because of the adherence to an outdated regional designation. you can't put Oklahoma and Maryland in the same region! the are others that are just as suspect. North Dakota in the midwest along with Missouri? please think about switching to regions that reflect modern realities. like mid Atlantic or Great Plains or south central or ...... then this would be a good quiz.

As explained above, in the classification metric used here, DE and MD are in the southern region (despite not being ‘the South’).
