They joined in 1916 because of repeated German encroachments into their African colonies and the sinking of Portuguese ships in the Atlantic by German submarines.
Yep. And the British persuaded the Portuguese to seize Central Powers ships in Lisbon. After all the German shenanigans on the high seas and in Africa, the Portuguese were happy to comply. Which garnered them a declaration of war from both Germany and Austria-Hungary.
Would never have guessed Newfoundland. I'm Canadian and I do know that it did not join the Confederation until 49, but I admit I never thought of what kind of status it had before that. Thanks for fixing that :).
before WWII in the 1930s Newfoundland was an English Colony still. I learned this the hardway playing a game called Calm before the Storm, which takes place pre-WWII days, if you were the US and attacked Canada for resources the UK (England) would attack you .
Where's India? Even by your own source, Wikipedia, they lost over 60K military, and were a separate country within the Commonwealth, like Australia or Canada.
The Union of South Africa was formed on 31 May 1910, uniting four colonies into a dominion with the same status as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Newfoundland. The Union engaged in an invasion of German South West Africa independent of the UK, took over the invasion of Tanganyika and sent troops to Palestine and the Western Front.
At the end of the war it was rewarded with a mandate over South West Africa (Namibia), which it treated as an integral part of South Africa until 1990.
Uh, it was called the Russian empire until the October revolution where it backed out of the war as USSR. Also people always still called it Russia. Before you get angry, get educated
"The Serbian Army declined severely towards the end of the war, falling from about 420,000[2] at its peak to about 100,000 at the moment of liberation. The Kingdom of Serbia lost more than 1,200,000 inhabitants during the war (both army and civilian losses), which represented over 29% of its overall population and 60% of its male population"
Only if all the other countries are going to have their full names listed as well. And if the Countries of the World quiz changes the UK's current name to "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".
Ok. Call me biased because it's my homeland, but what about Czechoslovakia? I know it was founded after the war, but the "legionnaires" fought and died for their freedom from Austria-Hungary, so it's not really fair to count them under Austrian casualties.
I always forget that Newfoundland was a separate country at one point.
But how in God's name did so many people miss Ottoman Empire? I was always taught they were one of the three main combatants on the Central Powers side. It was in fact this war that ended the Ottoman Empire.
Some African countries other than South Africa would be on this list if conscripted natives forced to hump supplies for European armies were included. Plenty of African soldiers went to fight and die in Europe as well but casualty records are spotty.
I was taking this quiz at 1:40 AM and I zoned out/fell asleep and I was thinking about colleges and then when I remembered I was taking the quiz I started typing in colleges smh
Even though the caveat states sovereign states that existed in 1914, I feel that India should have been included here. Although, India was a British colony until 1947, it had some sort of autonomy. The Indian Army was independent of the British Army. More than 70,000 Indian soldiers died in the Great War and not including India in this quiz makes me feel uneasy, rather uncomfortable. India is a founding member of several international organisations, including the League of Nations and the United Nations despite being a colony at that time. So, why is it not included here? Please consider revising.
Would be interested in a quiz with all formal belligerent countries, including Cuba, Panama, Siam/Thailand, Liberia, China, Brazil, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Haiti, and Honduras. Just because they didn't have many military casualties doesn't mean they were uninvolved.
I know they didn’t have enough casualties to make it onto this quiz, but Liberia did fight in WW1 and was one of the negotiating countries at Versailles.

Austira-Hungary attacked Serbia and that is how the World War I started.
By the way, Serbia gave a faighting lesson to them in the first few battles.

At the start I thought "I'll go with the bigger ones first", at the end I was sure I had it already in, so I didn't think of it...
