Who was actually the first to circumnavigate the world? The easy answer is Elcano and his crew, since they were the ones who completed the voyage. Unfortunately, Elcano, an ethnic Basque, was not historically acknowledged for political reasons. Portugal wanted to promote their own native son, Magellan, while Spain wanted to quell Basque nationalist sentiments.

Another possibility? Enrique of Malacca, a Malay slave owned by Magellan. By the time of Magellan's death, he was close to reaching home (which was either Sumatra or the Malay Peninsula). He probably left the crew after Magellan's death, so if he successfully returned home, he would have been the first to circumnavigate the globe.

As for Magellan, he was incredibly close. He went on a previous expedition to the Malay peninsula; had he traveled a bit farther, he would have definitively been the first to circumnavigate the globe.

I was so excited for this I nominated before I even took the quiz! Now I have though, and I can say it is brilliant. One thing I recommend is lengthening the time.

Thanks so much! It really means a lot to me that you enjoy these quizzes so much, and it's great motivation for me to continue (although making these quizzes is fun so that's also good motivation!). I don't think I'll lengthen the time because the average score is 14 and a lot of people are getting perfect scores. That being said, if the average ever goes down to like 9 or 10 maybe I'll consider it.

I read a lot about this, including the "patagonian giants" and Enrique.

I read a little bit about the Patagonian giants while researching this. It's definitely an interesting story, but, not surprisingly, greatly exaggerated.

Yeah by what I know, Patagonians are some of the smallest people in the world, so it's probably just staged :)

Some peoples quizzes should really go through automatically to being available for points.

Haha, thanks! Quizmaster does choose a lot of deserving quizzes immediately after they are made. Even when he doesn't though, they often get featured through nominations. I don't necessarily think this is my best quiz or the one that deserves a feature most, but I am pretty happy that my Marco Polo one ended up getting featured by nominations :)

Almost missed Canary Islands as technically he went from Spain to still Spain and that confused me.

Yeah, that one is tricky I'll admit. I hope have the differences between the squares and the circles helps though.

For the pairs of countries it might be better to just accept either of them rather than requiring they be entered in a particular order

Yeah, that honestly might be better than the way it is now. I'm busy right now but if I edit this quiz in the future I might make that change. Thanks for the advice!

Great Quiz mate! Really Enjoyed it and enjoyed the Historical Info you provided along with it! Might I suggest possibly accepting the name of the current country who owns the territory as well as the territory name itself. it was Definitely a little confusing guessing Spain then having to guess the Canary Islands right after. Especially since the Azores and Madeira are fairly close by. Definitely messes you up since there’s not very much time on the quiz.

Thanks! You may not have noticed it in the caveats, but I already accept both the country and territory name for all of those places. For example, if you go to the choice for the Canary Islands, you'll see it accepts both Spain and the Canary Islands. I appreciate the feedback though!
