No, panda's are bears. There used to be a bit of an issue as to whether they were "true" bears, but that's been settled. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panda#Classification

And the directions clearly ask you to name the "8 species of bear", not subspecies. Asking to list all of the subspecies would be nearly impossible. There are 16 subspecies of American black bears alone.

what about a red panda. it is a panda which is a bear not a marsupial. I typed in red panda about 20 times thinking I had mysteriously spelt it wrong, did it have a capital R?was it all one word? was it red panda bear?

So a seahorse is an actual horse? ( and dozens of others examples).

Giant pandas have recently be classed as bears. And the red panda is in a family of its own, but deemed closer to racoons than the giant panda.
