A Smorgasbord is similar to a buffet only in the variety of foods available at each. At a buffet, each person rises from his chair and chooses from among the food provided at a long serving table (or perhaps several serving tables). At a Smorgasbord, the variety of foods are placed in the middle of the individual's table and he chooses what he wants and puts it on his plate (much like the Indonesian "Rijst Tafel"). The difference is that at a buffet you go to the food whereas at a Smorgasbord, the food comes to you.
