There is NO way Burundi is the least happy country out of the 157. I went to Zambia and the people there were much happier than Americans and people any other place I have been. I would be in shock to find out that the United States is happier in actuality than Burundi, or really pretty much any African country for that matter. Sure, you might say that that was Zambia and not Burundi, but the countries are pretty similar in lifestyle.

I guess the way they rank them in terms of "happiness" is actually based on if they are living in a good economic situation. Sweden also ranks high in that list, (I live in Sweden) but most people have very cold behavior with one another and don't smile at all when in public. But of course there are exceptions.

It's some opinion poll, not an estimate of the actual living conditions.

Sure they, measure it that way, but that way of measuring is not how to find the countries with the greatest prevalence of the happiness emotion

There's also the simple fact that happiness can't be measured. There's no way to accurately measure a feeling quantitatively.

Polls aren't fact, just an attempt at getting insight. It has a lot things to factor in which makes it not very reliable (to the letter) like who you asked, what, how, when etc. There is always a grain of truth to it though it can give you a general idea (if all people questioned were done so in the same manner). And it might give you a different answer than you seemed to have been asking.

(like if you ask a kid if they are hungry when you hold something they don't like in front of them, or when you ask it when you hold a treat, the answer will differ dramatically, though the fact of how much and how long ago he had eaten hasn't changed))

Also being friendly or kind is not the same as being happy.

(I might even go as far as saying there is an inverse proportionality, many times people that don't have it easy in live are often very kind (and I don't mean when you aren't allowed to watch your favourite tv show or when your sports-team has lost.. )

Yeah I agree. I am from Norway, and we ranked number 1 on that list. My sister in law is from the Philippines, and imo they are much happier than norwegians, probably because they value familiy over material goods.

I think this is a common misconception. I know a lot of unhappy Filipinos. Even though generally they are a very friendly, somewhat optimistic-in-spite-of-having-little-reason-to-be people. Get to know them and many are dealing with a lot of stress.

So you went to one African country, over a thousand miles away, and the people there seemed happy to you, therefore the people in Burundi must obviously be happy too? Even though Burundi has experienced far more armed conflict and ethnic violence in the past 30 years than Zambia, and is altogether in a completely different situation?

Is... Is this comment MEANT to be satirical, or..?

Well since you visited Zambia, a country that is not Burundi, and you judged them as being happier than Americans, you MUST be right lol. So weird when people take their extremely biased, limited anecdotal experiences as a fact.

Burundi is really the 78th most populous country in the world? With 196 countries total? Damn. We need to cut back on the number of countries we have. That's just silly.

am i missing something? why is the question about the demonym a notable fact? it's not unusual, it even fits the same pattern as the example you give, and in order to type it you are given automatically Kirundi, which i bet way less people would have got if not for that. there are so many things i would love to learn about burundi rather than these forced questions

Hello. Just a helpful suggestion: The Tutsi tribe is also known as Watusi tribe. I recommend you allow that as a type in because some people (me) only knew the Tutsi tribe as the Watusi. Thanks. Great quiz by the way
