- The United Kingdom isn't a country. The books are set in England. - One of the questions says 'what time of animal is it?', which should be 'what type of animal is it?' Other than that, a nice little quiz!

The train may travel from Kings Cross in London, but the students come from all over. The Weasleys and Lovegoods are from Devon, Neville once fell off Blackpool Pier (in Lancashire), Malfoy Manor is in Dorset, Fleur and Bill live in Wales (and their children went to Hogwarts) and yes. Seamus was Irish. (Cho may or may not have grown up in Scotland-- the point is, the actress was Scottish) The point is, all those students were BRITISH. Britain is at once, 4 countries in 1 country-- it contains Northern Ireland, Wales, England, and Scotland. They may have travelled far and wide to get to Hogwarts, but they all belonged. And Rowling has also stated that despite the fact that the Hogwarts Express departs from London, it also stops in multiple other major cities--perhaps Leeds or York and Edinburgh or Glasgow.

The UK is a shortened version of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. That means that Great Britain consists of Wales, Scotland, England, and other crown dependencies such as the Isle of Man. England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland are commonly called countries here, but they are not sovereign states. The UK and Ireland are the only real countries on the two islands, but for ease, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are called countries even though people know they are not independent, full countries. That is the view of most people living in the UK, like me.

The quiz is 'basic' for a reason. It does not take into account when an individual changed jobs etc. It is known that Dumbledore is headmaster for the majority of the series, and that Snape is the hated potions teacher. The 'hate' bit is pretty obvious, seeing that no one expressed outright dissent at Slughorn being the potions teacher in Half-blood prince. The Basilisk one could be changed though

Peeves is not a ghost. He is a poltergeist. Also, the basilisk does not kill anybody in Harry's second year. It Petrifies, not paralyzes. Draco Malfoy is not a part of any House, he is in a House. Saying "part of" suggests that Draco Malfoy is an unofficial House member, or that the correct House is an organization.
+2
level 12
May 31, 2013
Poltergeists ARE ghosts - look up the definition, saying "petrify" instead of "kill" would unnecessarily make the question even easier than it already is, and your last point is just pointless nitpicking over nothing.
+1
level 20
Jun 9, 2013
Actually, poltergeists are different than ghosts, because regular ghost can't pick up objects at all, where poltergeists can. Also, saying "petrify" is also completely different than "kill" because petrifying is making still or turning to stone, whereas kill means causing death.
+1
level 51
Sep 3, 2015
Also, ghosts are typically attached to a location, whereas poltergeists more often link to a person. That's why some paranormal activity seems to follow people from house to house.
+1
level 56
Sep 3, 2015
Really? We're arguing about the definition of a completely fictional entity now? Tsk. Anyway, the word 'poltergeist' means 'noisy ghost' so I think the case is closed on that one.

Feb 29, 2016
all of these points are needlessly picky. except that no one actually dies in the chamber of secrets. so just take out the kill part. the others are all fine. "In a house" vs. "part of a house" mean the same thing. a poltergeist is something like a ghost and even if it is a distinct thing, it's not gonna cause anyone to miss the question

Please accept "Scotland" for the country or don't accept "England". They're equally correct and incorrect as parts of the story are set in both countries. Also, as many people have pointed out, saying that the basilisk kills people in Harry's second year is factually incorrect. It petrifies people. It only killed one person and that was 50 years before the book.

Just so you know, a lot of people from the UK wouldn't call the UK their country, but their nationality. They would use their individual country. It might be more straightforward to change it to what nation are the books set in, or, accept Scotland as well considering that's where most of the books take place.
