Draw the World Map

Are you an expert in JetPunk's Geography Quizzes?
Do you love typing so long and fast that your fingers ache?
Have you nothing better to do for the next hour?
Then step right up and try this ridiculously difficult quiz! Draw the map of the world by entering ALL country borders, including seas, oceans, gulfs, bays, lakes, and of course other countries.
Maritime boundaries are... fluid. And overlapping. The bodies of water used are a little ambiguous, in general use the smallest subdivision of the Sea/Ocean/Gulf/Bay.
Lakes that are entirely contained within a country are not drawn on the map. Because they aren't borders.

Update 3!

Dot to dot mode... er 'Show missing borders' functionality is now available! I've only gone through the map once to ensure the dots are properly placed, so some errors may still occur, but hopefully it'll give you a hint when you get down to the end and missed 3 somewhere on the map (probably New Zealand).

Awesome quiz, but there are some spelling mistakes which made me lose points - Philippine Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea. Also, you haven't included several overseas borders (UK-Spain at Gibraltar, France-Pacific, France-Netherlands, UK-Carribean and Netherlands-Caribbean).

Yeah, I published it early so I could get another user's feedback and beta testing. The places you mentioned are all on my list, and thanks for keeping me honest on spelling!

Just an absolutely fantastic quiz, I didn't quite appreciate the scale until about half way through the time - it's absolutely epic. Thank you so, so much for making it!

As pointed out above, I think the only thing 'missing' from this is the overseas borders, especially the marine ones. From the top of my head - UK / Alboran Sea, UK / Caribbean Sea, UK / Levantine Sea. UK / Cyprus is a proper border, as is UK / Spain.

And to develop this further... France. If you're including Puerto Rico as part of the USA (I agree, of course it is!) then Tahiti, Mayotte and their respective seas need to be included...

Brilliant! I'll play this another 2-3 times tomorrow, and also get my thinking cap on - that way if I find anything worth noting I'll put it in one comment ahead of you making changes after the weekend, rather than it coming through in drips and drabs:)

I like how you've done 99.9% of the work on this, and done it very well!

Lol, I never claimed to be consistent! The scale of this map made St Clair seem cruel, and I should have done the channel on the last map, the focus on all the bodies of water this time made it stand out.

Have played this a few more times, and have been doing some research. The following are points all made in mind that this is all fairly arbitrary by nature, and that I'm not saying 'x' is wrong or 'y' is right, just things to think about:

- Does Tunisia border the Libyan sea? I've always thought that starts somewhere on the coastline of Libya and eastwards from there- personally I think Tunisia only borders the Med.

- More confident about this next one - pretty sure Djibouti / Red Sea missing? I think everywhere I can find information about coastline of Djibouti and looking on Google Earth, it borders both the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.

Other than that, nothing I can think of (apart from the comments above)! Thank you for all of your time on this:)

I didn’t get any answers involving the Philippine Sea because I only typed it in the correct spelling. And even Passport Island between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia is included? That’s an artificial island, wouldn’t that be a stretch?
+1
Level 90
Aug 29, 2021
Yeah, I flubbed the spelling and my type-in regexes for the seas are... incomplete. It's on my to-do list. But why on earth would the Saudi-Bahrain border be a stretch? It's small, sure, but larger than the Botswana/Namibia border. It's a border, on land, between two countries.
+1

Aug 30, 2021
Yeah I guess you’re right about the border between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. I think you’ve missed France-Netherlands on the island of St Martin, and also the Netherlands-Caribbean sea for Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, UK-alboran sea, UK-Levantine sea for Gibraltar and Akrotiri on Cyprus, UK-Cyprus for Akrotiri and Dhekelia on Cyprus

Suggestion to add Uk-Pacific Ocean for Pitcairn island, UK-Indian ocean for the British Indian Ocean Territory, USA-Philippine Sea on Guam and the Marianas, also Palau and Micronesia with the Philippine Sea. And also maybe France-Southern Ocean on Kerguelen and Australia-Southern on Heard Island if you would count it as a separate ocean? Would you consider subdividing some more bodies of water? Like Barents, Beaufort, White, Norwegian Sea…etc in the Arctic Ocean; Sea of Azov for Black Sea; gulfs of Suez and Aqaba for Red Sea; gulfs of Bothnia and Finland for the Baltic Sea; Labrador Sea for the Atlantic Ocean. Also straits like Makassar, Taiwan, Kattegat, Skagerrak and Bab al-Mandab since you included Malacca and Hormuz straits in your quiz.

Pitcairn and the BIOT are on my list. I hadn't considered adding Guam or American Samoa... I'll look into that. I considered adding the Southern Ocean as boundaries, especially where I used the Bight instead, but deciding where the boundaries of that ocean lie is worse than any other body of water currently on the quiz, so I decided to completely ignore it like Antarctica. As for the other seas, it's a balancing act. It seems you can always get smaller subdivisions, I'll review them again once I've got the overseas territories and islands sorted.

Yep, I've fixed it in the spreadsheet, so next time I upload the answers, all instances of that name will be corrected--both for display and type-ins. However, the spreadsheet's not in a good state right now, with all the additional islands/overseas territories I'm adding, so it's going to have to wait until the full update.

Amazing! To a certain extent, I think this is the ultimate JetPunk quiz, because it really tests so much of what this site has taught me in the past few years. I got 557, so clearly I still have a bit to learn (those stupid seas in the Mediterranean and around Indonesia kept messing me up :P) but this is a quiz I'll almost certainly come back to in the future. I'm really not sure why it doesn't have more nominations, but I can definitely say you've earned one from me :)

This is actually something that I wanted to suggest too (forgot to mention in my first comment), and I might be able to help with it. I'm still far from an SVG expert, but I've had to do similar things in some of my previous map quizzes :)

If you used just the stroke of the paths to make the tracings, you could try a command like this: .svg-holder .svg-incorrect { stroke: #FF6666 !important; }

Theoretically, it should convert the strokes to red when incorrect. If it involves fill though or some other property, this probably won't work.

+1

Cool, I'll give that a shot. Fill on all the paths in this svg except the island areas like Palau is set to 0% opacity, so it shouldn't use that property.

What's everyone's opinion on the Dead Sea and Palestine? I left the Sea off due to its size, but historical significance and notoriety make an argument for including it. The initial concept of the quiz was to draw all the lines on the Countries of the World map, which does include lines between Israel and the Territories... I'm torn.
+1

Include them, why not? But there’s the issue of Palestine not usually being an accepted answer on featured Jetpunk map quizzes, so there’s that.
+1
Level 55
Sep 18, 2021
To add my (late) opinion to this - Dead Sea totally up to you about whether you'd include it vs. the rest - can see the merits for it as it makes up the borders of Jordan and Israel.

For Palestine, I don't think it should be included - not for any political reasons, simply I think this quiz is a massive extension of all JetPunk knowledge and for the most part, it isn't an accepted answer in any country quizzes. In my view I'd feel like it wouldn't be 'fair' if I finished the quiz and had that as a missing answer. Just my thoughts!

Just retook the updated quiz. There are map issues at the Canaries and northeastern Spain. I knew you just updated it but may I suggest adding Netherlands-Atlantic for the northeastern coasts of Saba and Sint Eustatius during the next update?
+1
Level 90
Sep 15, 2021
Hmm, I'll look at it closer tomorrow, but at first glance, their position west and south of other islands in the Lesser Antilles would put them fully in the Caribbean, so they'd join St Martin and the ABCs rather than being a separate answer. I just ran through Spain and was unable to see any map issues, could you explain what you're seeing?
+1
Level 79
Sep 16, 2021
When I type UK-Spain, the Canary Islands appear in the wrong location intersecting with mainland Morocco, so does an arbitrary line in the basque region of Spain. The Canary Islands appear once more in the right position when I type Spain-Atlantic. This means the Canaries appear twice on the map.

nice, I keep playing this quiz :)

should there be Norway-Atlantic Ocean for Bouvet Island?

also I wonder if type-ins can be added to make life easier. Eg typing the first 3 letters of countries to get the borders done? eg ITAFRA would get Italy-France. Or something like URUGUAY-ALL-ARGENTINA-BRAZIL so that if you know all borders of a country in alphabetical order you can get them all with a single long string?

+1
Level 90
Sep 20, 2021
Wow, I was not aware of Bouvet Island. That's getting added! I'm not sure about the other ideas, they'd make this easier, and at the same time more frustrating. (Can you imagine after typing in the long list of China borders, if I'd decided to order them differently than you did?) I'll think on it.
+1

I was thinking alphabetical order. It's just that doing the quiz for the nth time I still have to go through typing all the areas I know 'perfectly well' before reaching the difficult parts, so some 'difficult' typing shortcuts that requires very good knowledge perhaps can be acceptable. Great quiz, I just got my first 100%! :D

Yeah, I completely understand, it just gets a little problematic in the implementation. Macedonia vs Northern Macedonia probably wouldn't make a big difference but Cote d'Ivoire vs Ivory Coast, East Timor vs Timor l'Este, Congo vs Rebublic of the Congo...

Reguarding type-ins: for example ^(THE)?GAMBIA([A-Z]+)?SEN[AEI]GAL and ^SEN[AEI]GAL([A-Z]+)?(THE)?GAMBIA are the Gambia-Senegal type-ins - so basically I join the two type-ins and put ([A-Z]+)? in between to allow anything in between the two names - which, as a side effect I hadn't realized, allows for the 'remove X' trick.

As you say implementation for the 'mega type-in' wouldn't be easy, also depends how much time you would want to spend in creating the type-in string - fastest way is probably to allow just for exact typing of JetPunk names (as in the answer to the countries of the world quiz) in alphabetical order.

1. Russia-Baltic is missing from the answer list

2. The Kaliningrad coast only appears when I type Russia-Finland, and when I do type that, it shows that I’ve typed 2 answers.

3. Only “Tonki” is accepted, not Tonkin. (Problem only shows up when Tonkin is the first word in an answer pair)

4. Davis Strait, not “Striat”

5. NZ-Cook Strait, not Inlet

6. When I type Amundsen-Canada, Ungava Bay in Northern Quebec also lights up

7. When I type Indonesia-Tomini, extra places light up like northeastern Flores, the north coasts of the Alor Islands just to its east, and the western coasts of the Aru Islands below New Guinea’s Bird’s Head peninsula.

8. Either “Kolyuchin, Chaun” or “Kolyuchinskaya, Chaunskaya” , not “Kolyuchinskya, Chaunskya”

Great update!! Thanks a lot!!

A few things:

1 if you have Bahrain-Saudi Arabia border which is a bridge why don't you have Singapore-Malaysia? Although I suppose there is a shared artificial island in the first one

2 Titicaca lake please :)

3 This may be somewhat complicated but it would be nice to see if you are missing a land border or a water one, maybe by shading the cells with different colours?

+1
Level 90
Sep 27, 2021
1. Yep, the artificial Passport Island has a land border between the two countries, that's why it counts but Singapore/Malaysia and Denmark/Sweden don't.

2. Titicaca is already plotted, just waiting the next push. I was planning to wait until I have all the coordinates plotted for the 'show missing borders' functionality, but I've got a lot of other additions as well, so I might push them all separate from the missing dots.

3. Ooh, that's a good idea. If JetPunk allows importing of cell formats like it does for type-ins, that would be trivial to implement.

Sep 28, 2021
I considered St. Pierre & Miquelon, but they are outside the area I marked as the St. Lawrence Channel, so they're part of the France/Atlantic border. Looking again... I could be persuaded.

Svalbard... is missing from this map. I'll add it.

+1
Level 79
Sep 28, 2021
Maybe you could change “St Lawrence Channel” into the “Gulf of St Lawrence” as the latter’s boundary is defined by the International Hydrographic Organization to border SP&M and it also encompasses the area that already appears in your map under the former’s name. You could take a look at this website which cites this definition from the IHO which also has an interactive map where the latter’s defined area is shaded red: https://www.marineregions.org/gazetteer.php?p=details&id=4290

Here is the IHO source document: https://www.vliz.be/imisdocs/publications/ocrd/76595.pdf

Well, the most recent additions are not easy, but I guess that's the spirit. You have to be a rather fast typist, not a problem for me, but it must be for some... too bad about the one hour limit.

Anyway, if you're looking for a 750th answer, I guess you forgot the chinese side of the Taiwan strait, didn't you?

I also wonder if some other african lakes on borders should be added or not. I mean, if there are the Dead Sea and the Lake of the Woods, why not Lake Kivu, Lake Edward and Lake Albert? They are not even lesser-known than Lake Turkana, I think. But then you'd have to consider Lake Mweru and Lake Kariba as well... I don't know ^^. And finally, I realize that Lake Chad is ALSO on borders, and it's quite well-known, but it's a complicated case since it has shrunk badly these last decades.

A suggestion: since this quiz is all about being ridiculous and overly tedious, I think that Molucca(Sea) shouldn’t be an accepted misspelled answer for (Strait of)Malacca cuz when I type 🇮🇩-Malacca, the former appears too BUT not vice versa (that’s why I assume it’s treated as a misspelling).

I think nailing Molucca’s spelling is better since such loopholes defeats the purpose of this quiz; of course coincidences like guinea-Ivory Coast or Cambodia-Thailand don’t count since requiring to type “gulf of” in such cases are too absurd even for this quiz imo.

So the recent inclusion of several lakes has led me to begin reconsidering my position on non-border lakes. For example, we draw on the map Lake Superior. The boundary between the US and Canada is not along the shore, but down the middle of the lake, but we draw the shoreline. Then we additionally draw the shoreline of Chesapeake Bay. If I'm doing that (though it's all internal to the US, except at its mouth), why am I not making you draw Lake Michigan (which is all internal to the US, except at its mouth)? So it's got to come down to reasonable expectations... would it be reasonable/fun for you to have to draw large lakes like Michigan, Great Bear, Baikal, etc?

you are not making us draw lake Michigan because you are making us draw coastlines where you can go abroad via water? I'm assuming you're talking about the Mediterranean not bordering countries like Greece or Egypt. This is for the same reason the Atlantic Ocean doesn't border Mexico--smaller subdivisions of the Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, border Mexico instead. If you look at the smaller seas that make up the Mediterranean, only a few countries near the west-central part of the Mediterranean touch the larger body. This was one of the first challenges I faced when making this quiz. I would have liked to leave out the Mediterranean entirely, but there is no subdivision sea for the area between Corsica/Sardinia and the Balearic Islands.

Don’t think that as a personal political choice by the quiz-maker. I think it is to be consistent with Jetpunk’s other quizzes that do not count it as a country. It’s like how Taiwan is considered a sovereign country in all the other quizzes. It wouldn’t be fair to suddenly include a country like Palestine that isn’t in the usual list.

I am still torn on what to do on Palestine. I could make it a pre-drawn area like the current triangle at Jammu and Kashmir, but that seems to come out in favor of Palestinian statehood. I've also toyed with breaking out the Palestine borders with Egypt, the Levantine, and Jordan, and make guessing the Israel borders also work for them, but that leaves the question of the Palestine/Israel lines at Gaza and the West Bank. As a friend pointed out to me, the title of the quiz is to "Draw the World Map," and the World map has that line... Yeah. Just torn.

Fair enough, Mister plattitude but why include Lake Titicaca between Bolivia and Peru? That had me stumped. As for the Palestine question you mentioned... I would suggest you put them in as grey areas. Jetpunk has a pretty good record for consistency which makes it a good learning site. My students are amazed by it. Alas, they always go straight to the Harry Potter and Superman quizzes when they log in. I smile and ask "So which US state did Clark Kent grow up in?" "KANSAS!" "And who was his next door neighbour?" "DOROTHY!" "And what is the name of the talking rat in Harry Potter?" "SCABBERS!" OMG...

Great job! I can't believe I missed some really obvious European ones (Denmark-Germany, Belgium-France, Austria-Switzerland) and all of the Adriatic borders... I've been wanting to do this for a while but it was too intimidating.

I started with Yemen-Aden, which led me to notice a bug with the dots. The dots for Yemen-Arabian and Yemen-Aden are reversed, so the positions are right, but the Yemen-Aden dot is on the Yemen-Arabian line and vice-versa.

Do you plan on ever making a version including maritime borders? That could be an interesting idea. This is really neat and detailed, thank you for making it!

Thanks for the head's up on the Yemeni dots, I'll update them. I have actually considered drawing dividing lines between the seas, even as 'given' lines visible when you start the quiz. The boundaries are so ambiguous though, and I haven't taken the time to try to line it all out. The one I think about most often that is needed to be 'fair' is the Sargasso sea.

Well, as you can see from the borders that extend from it, it is the Judicial Oligarchy of Plattitudia. I'm no expert at geopolitics, but it seemed to me the best way to resolve the ownership of an area with conflicting claims was to stake my own claim in the area. Plattitudia is currently evaluating the annexation of other areas, including Bir Tawil between Egypt and Sudan and the Marie Byrd land in Antarctica.

Every answer has two parts :- a country, and another country (or body of water) that it borders.

e.g. as HydraMite said, to draw the border between the USA and Canada, you type "USACanada".

To draw the border between the USA and Mexico, you type "USAMexico" etc.

Do that for every country in the world and you will fill in the map.
