Click on the map to zoom in if certain states are hard to see.
Holy Roman Empire outlined in red. Swiss Confederacy outlined in green.
While the borders of the Holy Roman Empire might not be entirely perfect, it should be a decent representation of which states made up parts of it.

I wondered about that too. It took some digging, but I finally found it thanks to DrakiGuy's comment below. Seems it was a Tatar khanate and vassal state of Russia. Here's the Wikipedia page.

Pretty funny there's a little piece of Spain in the middle of France (is it Lyon or somewhere near it?), i'm assuming it's something with the royal families. And also, that Papal States' area, is it Avignon?

Not sure to be honest. And yes, that is indeed Avignon.

Good SVG, but one thing definitely needs to be changed. The four Khanates were just divisions of the Mongol Empire. Please accept "Mongol" as a type in. I enjoyed exercising my ever-expanding knowledge of old European states.

The old Habsburg lands were surely just a formality at this point?
+1
Level 55
Apr 19, 2021
The reorganisation into the Austrian Empire didn't happen until 1804. This was still when a majority of the possessions were to be considered to be in personal union. Either way, it would've either been erroneously labelling all of the possessions as an unified entity as the "Habsburg Monarchy" or show the possessions separately like this map does.

OTOH Spain was consolidated only in early 18th century, and Catalonia was in the middle of the war, hardly a part of France.
+1
Level 55

Spain is staying as it is considering it's generally pretty acceptable showing it the way its shown here.I will take a look at Catalonia's borders however.
+1
Level 91
Apr 19, 2021
During the war, the catalan government recognised Louis XIII of France as count of Barcelona in 1641 but in 1652 it recognised back again Philip IV of Spain. Thus at this moment Catalonia was in personal union with France. May be you could add Catalonia as an answer with a coloured border outlining the possessions of th king of France or if it doesn't disrupt too much the quiz change it to "countries of Europe in 1652" and include Catalonia in Spain

Impressive indeed, and extremely difficult. I know a bunch of German cities but only got 120 on my fourth try.

So, what doesn't impress me, is that 4,1% of takers got them all on their first take. There might be one or two real specialists of the feudal history of Germany, but I doubt it. They are most certainly all pathetic cheaters. And I'm afraid that IS how you get to level 90 or so. Allright, I shouldn't care about points but I'm just a leveling addict, and it always give me a motivation to master a quiz. But cheating is no fun for me. Anyways, in this case, many fair players are stolen one point, and I wish the owners of the site could do something to avoid that (at least erase the statistical bias for extreme quizzes like this one...).

I see your point, and in some cases you may be right.

But there are quite a few historical quizzes like this, actually. I usually get pretty high results, because once you get to remember the German and Italian states (from other quizzes), just another quiz becomes much less of a challenge. Especially with Russia and France in more or less one piece.

I'm not saying I don't miss LOTS of them all the time, for some just keep slipping my mind. I'm just saying some might remember them. Probably not as many as that 4,1%.

If you cheat in a quiz like this I wouldn't even call it cheating tbh. If you're at such a high level that you really need the 5pts from this quiz then pfff go ahead and give yourself a helping hand as far as I'm concerned, it'll still take a hell of a lot of effort and you'll learn something along the way.

Some people might just be doing it for typing practice if they are getting everything. A lot of those German and Dutch words have letter combinations you don't find too much in English (IJsselstein, Bokhoven, Hohengeroldseck, Schlettstadt [this has two cases of four consonants in a row], Muhlhausen [don't see hlh too often], etc). If you are working on your typing ability and have an hour to burn, people may have a list of entities in the HRE up while trying to type them all out. My typing has greatly improved doing that.
