Yeah, that was a surprising one. The U.S. Virgin Islands were bought off Denmark in 1917. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danish_West_Indies

Modern-day (Western) Samoa and American Samoa used to be a single unified kingdom under a de facto joint protectorate under the UK, US and Germany before it was split.

Nope. Vermont was a de facto independent republic that was admitted into the union in 1791.

I think there is some fundamental confusion regarding how the quiz is laid out. When 13 colonies are highlighted at the start, I assumed that we are to identify which country the 13 colonies gained independence from. in fact, you are starting with the 13 colonies as a base and are looking for us to identify which country the next acquisition came from. Therefore, once I type UK (for the original 13 colonies) and the map fills in with the second tranche of territory from the UK, I'm then trying to figure out what to type in for that group because UK isn't working. I didn't realize I needed to type in Vermont for the next (not shown) territory. I think the quiz would be more appealing if you showed the territory first and then asked us to identify who that came from - but that is your decision as a quiz maker. If you choose to leave it in the current format, I'd suggest that you make it clear that we need to identify the country for the next territory that is not yet shown on the map
