Mostly expected with two surprises.

1) Florida hates itself !?

2) South Carolina hates Ohio

Thought Florida hating itself was kinda funny honestly. I also thought it was odd that SC hates Ohio but after a little bit of research (one whole website), it seems that Ohioans are just really crappy drivers and travel to Myrtle Beach quite a lot in their minivans.

It's the recent football rivalry in the CFP between Clemson of South Carolina and Ohio State!

What is South Carolina's beef with Ohio??
+13
Level 33

There is some beef between clemson and ohio state. Clemson beat them in a bowl game and there has been hatred between those fan bases ever since.

Level 67

Yes, my first thought was that this poll was likely taken shortly after Clemson came back to beat Ohio State in the college football playoff in December 2019. Ohioans are absolutely crazy about Ohio State football.

I was planning to comment the same thing...what in the world would South Carolina have against Ohio?! I could see it if it was North Carolina, with the whole "First in Flight, Birthplace of Aviation" debate, but not South Carolina.

From Ohio...a ton of people here vacation down in South Carolina. I've never been but I've heard that the locals don't like the influx of outsiders during the summer months.

I meet people in Florida all the time who complain about how much they hate the state. I'm not sure why so many of them live there but it's kind of a cliche. I'm also not really sure what their problem with Florida is.. it's nice.

SC hating OH I imagine has a lot to do with college sports rivalries same as a lot of these, actually.

The weather is great. Sunshine. Warmth. Why do you think so many people are moving there flooding the place? It's not for the fantastic jobs market. Nobody moves to North Dakota for the climate.
+1
Level 78
Mar 27, 2020
For everything nice Florida boasts that brings in the tourists, living here is not quite such an attractive prospect. There is a lot of wealth inequality, not the best job market and a lot of competition, that sunshine state nickname doesn't include the fact that it's one of the rainiest states and also has hurricanes. The traffic is terrible in cities, dangerous outside of them. Dealing with tourists means a lot of economies depend on them, so we hurt when they don't come, but we also have to deal with their illnesses and occasionally rudeness. The cost of living is probably the worst aspect though, it's incredibly expensive to live in cities here.

I was born and raised in Ohio and moved to South Carolina and lived there for several years. I can say that South Carolinians probably hate Ohioans for that very reason ... we tend to move to the Carolinas and "yankee" everything up, as I was told.
+2
Level 72

I live in a tourist town in South Carolina. We hate Ohio because of the massive influx of tourists from Ohio every year. And it's ALWAYS a Ohio license plate when someone doesn't know how to drive. As for Clemson vs. Ohio State, that's not really a factor. We hated them way before they met in the playoffs.

There is a massive amount of transplants from Ohio in the Carolina's. Also, for some reason people in the Midwest seem to think Myrtle Beach (Dirty Myrtle as Carolinians like to call it) is an amazing vacation spot.

Wyoming - Yellowstone

But both a former Californian and a former Oregonian, I can tell you that the main beef a lot of people from these states have with California is all the Cali ex-pats fleeing to their states for a affordable living, lower taxes, etc., but bringing along a lot of the ideas and philosophies that inevitably lead to higher costs of living and higher taxes. Oh, and all the bad driving, too.

+3
Level 67
Mar 27, 2020
I've lived a lot of places and can enjoy the humor in most of these rivalries, but the hatred Massachusetts (where I've also lived) has for New York is juvenile and absolutely pathetic. It is a glaring case of Little Brother Syndrome, sublimated through a baseball rivalry. But it's not fun, and the people there take it way too seriously. They have a visceral, genuine hatred of New Yorkers just because Boston hasn't been the country's most interesting city for some 200 years. It's really nasty and depressing. I'm not defending New Yorkers, who can be pretty unpleasant in their own right, but at least with them, it doesn't feel intentional. New Yorkers are just thoughtless and can be kind of rude in an indiscriminant way. Bostonians are intentionally rude to outsiders, most especially New Yorkers, with whom they seem to think they are at war.

Hmmmm, I call foul on these survey results. I grew up in North Dakota, and I find it hard to believe that North Dakota hates South Dakota most. When I lived there I never heard people talk about South Dakota, but they would trash Minnesota a lot, even though, from where I lived, Minnesota was the farthest neighboring state. North Dakota has more social interchange with Minnesota than with its other neighbors because there are urban areas than straddle the ND-MN border. Also ND's biggest inter-state college sports rivalry is with Minnesota.

The "Florida hates itself" phenomenon reminds me of the board game "Lifeboat." In that game, each player assumes the identity of one of the unfortunate survivors of a shipwreck; each individual loves one person and hates one person. Sometimes the luck of the draw results in a player hating himself!
