Is the phrasing "think about how it could have got there" grammatically correct? I thought it should be "have gotten". I'm not a native speaker, hence a question and not a definite statement.

Apparently both are correct, it just depends on the dialect: wiktionary: gotten.

'Gotten' doesn't tend to be used/'correct' in varieties of English such as British English.
