Although Cape Verde has a population of 562,000 people and has Portuguese as the official language, it is not the native language of the people. Their native language is Cape Verdean Creole. But many Cape Verdeans can speak Portuguese too. I believe there is a similar situation for other former smaller Portuguese colonies.
