I think Basilica of Our Lady of Peace at Yamoussoukro (Côte d'Ivoire) is the largest church in the world, not Saint Peter's.

Level 60
Jul 23, 2020
Nope, St Peter's is a lot bigger.

Aug 29, 2020
I cite from wikipedia: Guinness World Records lists it [the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace] as the largest church in the world, having surpassed the previous record holder, St. Peter's Basilica, upon completion. It has an area of 30,000 square metres (320,000 sq ft) and is 158 metres (518 ft) high. However, it also includes a rectory and a villa (counted in the overall area), which are not strictly part of the church. It can accommodate 18,000 worshippers, compared to 60,000 for St. Peter's. Nevertheless, I believe, that neither the number of worshippers nor the fact that it is used for other small things too is enough proof on St Peter's behalf.

I think it actually it has fewer than that.

The area is 0.49 sq km, so 2.04 Popes per sq km.

2.4 would be way too many Popes.

Papal States (nowadays Latium, Umbria, Marche and Romagna) were controlled by the Pope until 1861 to 1870, not until 1929. Between 1870 and 1929 the Vatican State as a sovereign territory ceased to exist, and only the Holy See was in charge of the Catholic Church and all its physical possessions. In 1929 Mussolini granted a new territorial independence to that tiny bit of Rome surrounding St. Peter's, in exchange of the unconditional support from the Church and its hierarchy to the regime.
