London is the capital of the UK. Also, this quiz deals with capitals of soverign states and Wales is not a soverign state.

Well, despite most people being able to work it out, in DobbyDies' defence, the notes here do stipulate 'Closest capital city of a different country', not 'Closest capital city of a different sovereign state'. Here on Jetpunk, there have been many instances where the two have been clearly and separately defined.

I think you should also accept Tel Aviv for Jerusalem, because while Tel Aviv is not their recognized capital, the majority of the outside world recognizes it as Israel's capital.

Countries are free to choose their own capital thankfully. That's not UN mandated. Just because some activists at the UN want to send a political message, doesn't mean Jerusalem isn't the capital of Israel.

That's so funny! No! Jerusalem has been the capital of Israel since its founding back in 500 BCE. I think Tel Aviv is just more recognizably Israeli, so people guess that.

Jan 21, 2018
That's actually incorrect. Other countries who are confused as to where the Israel's government has been located. (Jerusalem since 500 BCE), place their embassies in Tel Aviv simply because it's the closest city to Jerusalem. It's not because their ignorant and don't know that the Israeli government is in Jerusalem.

Not trying to be too political, but is there any reason why tel aviv is not recognised here as the capital despite it being recognised by most UN municipalities as the defacto capital until Israel-Palestine sort their desputes which will be never? I think it's only the US and Israel that consider it to be the capital yeah?
+2

Jan 22, 2018
It's not a de-facto capital at all. The official functioning capital of Israel is Jerusalem. The Knesset is in Jerusalem. Foreign embassies are in Tel Aviv, but the capital of a country, de facto or otherwise, is not defined as where foreign embassies are located. The only reason embassies are located in Tel Aviv is to avoid pissing off Muslim countries that don't want to recognize Israeli control over Jerusalem.
+1

Jan 22, 2018
Yeah, not sure why this is so hard. Israel gets to choose the location for their capital, not the UN and not anyone else. And it's in Jerusalem. Kalbahamut is 100% right that the embassy locations are all about pressure from Muslim countries.

Tel Aviv is the capital of Israel, Jerusalem is in the Palestinian Territories, although some may argue Palestine is under Israeli rule, Palestine is a United Nations observer state, giving it the same status at Vatican City, and as you recognize the Vatican as a country (hence the answer to the Rome question) you must recognize Palestine.
