But if "Vatican City" is included as a "give me" in grey then for consistency Dominican Republic should also be given in grey.

Neither San Marino, nor Dominican Republic, are referred to as only the first word in their name, like the Vatican is sometimes.

WT2008 but Vatican (City) is said by sometimes omitting the city, or saying it as The Vatican. I've never heard anyone say The Dominican or even Dominican when speaking about Dominican Republic

But I have heard plenty of people call the Dominican Republic - Dominica. Despite that being its own country. Still Dominica doesn't end in -an.

I am curious as to what strategies people use for these sort of puzzles. Do you imagine a map, as I do? Do you go thru a list of countries in your head? Some other?

I use a combination of an (imagined) map in addition to brute force. I usually don't do so hot on these kinds of quizzes, but this time I got lucky.

Visualizing the map is my go-to. I usually start with Canada and work south before popping over to either Europe or Oceania and making my way east/west. I always finish with Africa because it's so many countries but doesn't have as many islands for me to accidentally skip.

An extra strategy that works for this quiz is just know what region "an" is associated with. While it doesn't have a meaning (that I know of) and isn't confined to a specific region (like Central Asia for the "stans"), as I went through the quiz I noticed that many of the answers were from "Asia." This, plus the fact that I couldn't think of any European/African/American countries ending in "an" off the top of my head meant that I prioritized Asia. This strategy might not be effective for every quiz like this, but it happens to work here.

I tend to go BAN CAN DAN etc and eventually also use the alhpabetical order of the answers to frame my missing answers. At the same time my brain is also traveling the world map. I forgot the Sudans...

Having "Vatican City" was very confusing, because it made me think that countries with any word ending in "-an" would qualify. But then "Dominican Republic" wasn't allowed.
