The heptarchy as described here is an oversimplification. There were other kingdoms at times, like Lindsey and Surrey, and not all of these were in existence all the time either.

Doesn't hepta mean seven? How could a Heptarchy have more than seven?

Well these were the seven major kingdoms, there were smaller independent realms that existed at various points during the heptarchy.

The name Heptarchy was coined in the 12th century by Henry of Huntingdon, long after the so-called Heptarchy was a thing. He oversimplified the situation. At no point in Anglo-Saxon history was there just seven polities that we might call kingdoms.

I really hope there was a time in history where some combination of Essex, Wessex, and Sussex went to war, and that historians refer to this as "The Battle of the Sexes."

This quiz is fun, but you give way too much time. Maybe shorten it to a minute or 45 seconds?

Did it really not cross you mind that as Cent wasn't accepted, you could try it with a K? This site is amazing with the spoonfeeding people insist on!
