It was named after a businessman from New York named Charles E. Rushmore. One story says that he was returning to the headquarters of the tin mine he worked for with a friend, and when he asked the friend what the name of the mountain was, the friend said, "Never had any but it has now—we'll call the thing Rushmore.". Another story from a local rancher says that he returned to the Black Hills year after year to hunt big game, and one day when he was with a different friend, he asked what the name of the mountain was, and he was told that it was named "Slaughterhouse Rock". Rushmore joked that his annual hunts around the mountain had earned him the right to have the mountain named after him. According to the story, after this the locals started jokingly calling the mountain "Mt. Rushmore", and the name stuck.
