:) I estimate that the numbers in the source article are BS. I've traveled all over the world and met tons of people who are fans of basketball (enormously popular everywhere from Latin America to Europe to Asia and the Middle East). I've never met anyone who was a fan of table tennis or volleyball. And hockey #3? I probably meet more people who like car racing and mixed martial arts. Quite a few more that are fans of pro wrestling (I know, not a real sport). I almost believe cricket is placed that high just because of India and Pakistan, but 2.5 billion fans? That would require that every single person in all 10 or so countries where cricket is even played are fans. I don't think that's true. I know tons of Brits and I think only one of them actually likes cricket. He gets made fun of by all the others for not watching football/soccer. I know quite a few Indians and Pakistanis, too. They're not all cricket fans, though several are.
followed the link and looked at their criteria... they are making assumptions based on internet traffic. So... maybe cricket fans are especially obsessed. and volleyball probably gets a boost from non-athletics-related searches, as does tennis. Just a theory.
Table tennis is so high because of China, (very popular over there). Cricket is also very popular in other places besides South Asia, such as the Caribbean, and South Asia alone is already very large in terms of population. The data is enormous in proportion, but perhaps not unbelievable.
Well I'd be the 1st to admit the numbers are debatable. I did a reasonable amount of research though and these were about as reliable as I could find. Actually, if the source is based on internet interest the bias is almost definitely against cricket. I.e. popular cricket following nations such as India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the West India have low internet use (for obvious reasons.)
kalbahamut... 1 jetpark quiz without basketball and grid iron (or whatever it's called). I'm sure you'll live. ;) Besides, you really can't count grid iron... it participation rates are miniscule.
Oz made so many quizzes during his brief stint here trying to showcase his bias against the USA that you'd almost think he would be proud of it, but instead he got quite perturbed and defensive whenever anyone pointed it out. But, yes, obviously the reason he made the cutoff 8 instead of 10 was because he found a top 10 list where #9 and #10 were American sports and he didn't want to include them. (I found the same list when I searched for the source)
